Want to powder coat the headlight bucket and trim. Need to remove wires. Looks like you need to remove the individual wires from the plug socket under the gas tank and pull the harness out the front of the bucket. How do they come out of the socket? Do they have the tabs that need to be depressed on each to remove?? Been trying for a while and not having too much luck. Any help would be great...........

I have the '01 manual and it is not listed on 7.27, or anywhere I can find....damn it, that would have been too easy anyways.

If it's a standard plastic connector, there will be tabs on the backside of the electrical contact points that hold them into the plastic.

Before you do any of this, LABEL WHICH SOCKET HAD WHICH COLOR WIRE IN IT.

Get a straight dental pick (you can get assortment packages at the local hobby shop for a few bucks - best garage money I've ever spent). go in from the wire end of the plastic. If you sight down the wire, and look at the connector, one side will have a notch. That notch is where the tab is.

PUSH the wire and connector towards where the light would be, to move the tab away from the plastic.

Insert your pick into the slot, keeping it tight to the plastic.

When it bottoms out, lever it towards the connector.

Pull on the wire and the pick, and everything should come out. Kinda like that old kids' game "operation" : )

Either that, or simply cut the wires somewhere in the middle. When its time to rebuild, simply solder and heat-shrink the wires back together.

Thanks Ratbuell. That's the way it looked like the wires should come out but I wasn't having any luck with the pick I had (90deg one) I'll pick up a strait one to get in there a little further.

Kaikoura, Checked again in my 2001 manual, cant find any info on how to take the wires out of the plug, or any illustrations either.

Thanks guys...............jim
