Im about to have my frame powdercoated which means ill loose the vin info... any way to get a new one or do I just kiss it goodbye? Would any problems arise in the future without it? Is the vin stamped anywhere?

Should be stamped on the headstock

It's illegal to reproduce the VIN sticker and resell them, because of the obvious potential for number tampering. Gusm2 is right, it's stamped on the headstock. Good idea to show your powdercoater where it is and have them mask it so it doesn't get filled it.

Maybe its possible to heat the sticker a little with a hair dryer and slowly peal it off

If this sticker is anything like a "calibration sticker", it will start to say VOID VOID VOID VOID across it as you remove!

With care, you should be able to remove the original VIN sticker without damage. I did it with my S2 back when I had the frame repowdercoated. That had to be back in '97 or '98, so maybe the 'freshness' of the adhesive allowed the results I achieved.

Can't comment on a replacement VIN label,

My M2L has the VIN on the steering neck but it is not a sticker nor is it stamped. It seems to be raised out from the metal but would surely be harder to read after powder coating but may still be legal that is my opinion. I am sure that others have successfully powdercoated these frames with good results.

What? Every Buell (Motorcycle Company production motorcycle), when produced, had the VIN stamped into the head tube of the frame and also a VIN label (location varied).

I find that M2 with a sticker and no stamping quite odd...

On the stamped VIN's, why not just tape over that area and powder coat the rest?

I agree with 1313, a frame without a VIN stamped on it is odd. It might have been a warranty replacement frame that got out the door without being stamped.

>>>It might have been a warranty replacement frame that got out the door without being stamped.

That would violate a written process and procedure AND cost some dealer a boat loaf of money.

In the "old days" . . . when a dealer ordered a frame the replacement wasn't stamped or shaped until the old one was returned (note: you cut the head section out and just returned it).

But that caused some exceedingly long turn around times so the process was changed and there is a collection of parts for which the dealer essentially puts up a de facto bond.

The new frame will ship but if the old frame (head section) is not received in some time frame (something like 10 or 15 days) the dealer's account with HD is charged a penal sum.

The frame is stamped. It's right there in the FMVSS.

§ 565.23 49 CFR Ch. V (10–1–11 Edition)

(e) The VIN of each vehicle shall appear
clearly and indelibly upon either a
part of the vehicle, other than the glazing,
that is not designed to be removed
except for repair or upon a separate
plate or label that is permanently affixed
to such a part.

Mmmh I still got a new RSS frame without anything, no number no sticker. The story I was told is that Erik gave the frame as a exhibit to a museum. I bought it long long ago in the U.S. Any guess on that Court or anybody else ?

There's no VIN on that frame because it was never used in a vehicle.
