Author Message   800mxz Posted on Monday, February 17, 2014 - 04:23 pm:        Well I have been looking for a S3T for awhile now, and found one close to me that I am willing to take a look at, but it is about 7 hours away. Anyways, the bike is a 2009, and the guy has owned it since new. Say it was the first 99 that was out near him when he bought it. Now, I have a couple questions if you can help. Owner says it is a 99, and it is Fuel Injected (98 had carbs, I used to own a 98 S3T) but what I see in the pics are (1) the engine cases are bare aluminum, not black (thought the 99s were black?) and (2) the bike has the older, non-cast swingarm on it, which I thought was a tell-tale sign of a 99? I just want to ask if I should worry that this is some kind of basket case. Was it possible for there to be a 99 with EFI, cast engine cases (not black) and the fabricated (not-cast) rear swingarm?   Hootowl Posted on Monday, February 17, 2014 - 04:48 pm:        The picture describes a 98 or earlier bike, unless he has replaced the swingarm with an older unit. But also, as you say, 99s had black cases. Later model tubers went back to silver with black heads, but the cases were black in 99. My vote is it's a early '00 being it's FI. He could also look at the EPA sticker on the reaction link mount that has the VIN on it - the data of manufacture is there. IT will be a bit off of the Calendar year - my 1998 S3 was built in November of 1997. The last digits of the Frame and engine should be the same. If not, something was swapped around. Everything appears to be a 98, which I would actually prefer over the first year HD Fuel Injection. He is out of state on business and is sending me the VIN and more pics of everything when he gets home. He doesn't know if it is an 98 or a 99... It's on the registration and the title. And anyone with the slightest interest in things mechanical would know whether the bike was carbureted. The primary barely had any in it and the oil tank was OVER serviced...... But it was a "one owner" bike...... Not everyone has time to sit in the garage and stare at their bike. He owns two businesses in two states, and had a friend who owns a bike service business and has the friend take care of the bike. I'm glad I'm going to be a owner of a "Tuber" again
