My X1 wont start, when I hit the starter, all I get is a loud clicking noise. I figured that the battery was dead yesterday so I charged it up all night and the results were the same this morning. The battery is an HD and is less than a year old. Any ideas? Ready to take her out!

Really sounds like a wussy battery to me.
These injected things need a lot of juice to wake up properly.

I suggest jumping it from a NON RUNNING car battery.
(Running car = fried voltage regulator)

Thank you, that got her started, guess Ill take it out and see if running the engine for a while will help any. Had no idea you could jump start from a non running vehicle battery. Great info!

Guess it's time for a new battery, any suggestions?

I agree with Nate test with a car battery with the cars keys locked in the medicine cabinet and when you get a new battery think about picking up a small battery tender just to keep it prime. my battery lasted an extra six months from my last one and still counting besides she don't cough on a cold start when I have her on the tender vs when I don't.

Haha in the medicine cabinet. Well I guess I'm picking up a tender for my next battery. Hopefully HD replaces this one. I'm in S. Texas so its hard to believe the cold weather got to it! Although it is a freezing 61 today lol

Hot Cold their lifespan if kept charged should be close to 2 years in good conditions... At least that's what I have been able to get out of them.. Good luck

"ATTENTION" !!!

A simple LOAD TEST for your battery ...

In a DARK GARAGE:

TURN YOUR IGNITION SWITCH ON ...

Let your fuel pump spin up ...

"NOTICE" how bright your lights are !!!

"PUSH" the starter switch ...

IF YOUR LIGHTS GOES DIM OR GO OUT AND THE STARTER JUST CLICKS YOU NEED TO CHARGE YOUR BATTERY FOR 24 HOURS !!!

"NOW" if after you charge the battery and it still dose the same thing you simply need a new battery ...

Have you ever noticed when you start your car with the lights on THAT THE LIGHTS GO OUT and when you start you bike they do not ???

That is because the car has a relay to temporally turn off the lights where your bike does not ...

Early on "i" saw this as a problem and put cut off switches on my head light and tail light o turn them off ...

Was going to put a relay on to do this but never got around to it as "i" change my batteries on a regular maintenance program ...

YOU MUST REMEMBER if you get that LAST ELECTRON OUT OF YOUR BATTERY it could also take you STATOR and VOLTAGE REGULATOR with it !!!

That's way too short if its an HD battery. My HD battery lasted just under six years but I connect it up to a Tender after each ride and over long down times. I have a pig tail permanently hooked up to the battery so it takes about five seconds to plug it into the connector. No brainer.

Lakes:

It is hard to say how long a battery will last ...

It all depends on the CRANKING AMPS(volts),how COLD it is where you live, the ENGINE COMPRESSION, the DAY IT WAS MADE, the BRAND, how well you TAKE CARE OF IT(keep on a trickle charge when not riding and a 24 hour charge every 6 months), and keeping the battery TERMINALS CLEAN and TIGHT ...

Even with all this, some name BRAND batteries will last longer than others of the same BRAND ...

That is why they have PRO-RATED WARRANTIES !!!

This is the way "i" start my BATTERY off right ...

This maybe a little time consuming for some, "BUT" "i" have never been on the side of the road with NO CRANK or ever miss a ride because of a NO CRANK ...

Before "i" ever put my a NEW BATTERY is service(also applies to your car battery)it goes on the CHARGER(24 hours) ...

Record the following:

It is then before installing in the vehicle and with a electronic VOM check the STATIC voltage ...

Then install in the vehicle and have someone hit the starter an check the CRANKING VOLTAGE ...

As you keep these records over the years you will see the deterioration start to
occur in the battery to the point one day you get a NO CRANK ...

"i" use a BATTERY PLUS CHARGER to help track the status of my battery and when it starts to take longer and longer for the
FLOAT LED to stop flashing this is and indication it is getting close to the replacement time ...

Buellistic- Thanks for all of the info, thats enough to keep everybody on the road without battery problems!

Jumped her earlier and sure enough immediately after shutdown, she started right up. After a couple hours, no start again. Also, I did check the terminals, all clean and tight.

The lights dimmed when an attempt was made to start, so Ill try charging it for 24 hrs and see what happens.

-Either way and new battery is being ordered.

Thanks again for all of the input

Sulfation is your enemy and prob the #1 cause of poor performance and longevity from a battery. I used to keep a Battery Tender on my batteries when not using a bike. Then I found out that they did not desulfate the battery. I have since switched to the batteryMINDer brand, which DOES desulfate the battery, and have had great success with my batteries lasting around 7 years. My bikes are stored in a heated/cooled garage also.
I have a couple of their model 2012 units and am very pleased. And-you can charge up to 6 batteries at once. Just make sure each battery is fully charged before you connect in parallel. I think they're around $80-90.
I had a car battery stone dead, would not take a charge, and the batteryminder saved it. Been using the battery for 2 1/2 years and still going strong.

I had what I thought was a battery issue and after a new battery had the same thing. I replaced both relays under the tail and by the oil tank. One is ignition and one is for the starter. I wasn't sure which one was starter so replaced both. I haven't had a battery issue since. Seems the relay would work but was weak.
