Can someone explain where the SN's are on the S1's and how to decipher them? Specifically:

1. How can you tell what year the S1 is?

2. How can you tell if it's an S1 or an S1W?

3. How can you tell if the engine is original?

Thanx...

SS in the serial number designates an S1. YS designates an S1W. These should be located in the fourth and fifth digits. The tenth digit designates the year. I know for mine the letter W is for 1998 model year. I believe part of the number on the left side crankcase should match the number on the steering head. Got this out of my service manual. someone else may have additional details.

Thanks for the clarification. Can you provide some generic examples of what a complete S1 SN looks like? Like an example of a '98 SW1 frame serial number looks like:

XXXYSXXXXW (based on what you said...is that right?)

...and the matching engine serial number looks like (insert whatever it looks like)? And you can tell the two match because (insert whatever reason it means they match).

Same for the 96 and 97 S1's. Thanks.

May be overkill, but...
