Are these interchangeable? S1 motor going in a M2 frame use the S1 mount or the M2? Is one better then the other ( the S1 looks beafier) What is the extra hole for on the right side if yhe m2 and the tab on the left?

They are not interchangeable if you are retaining the stock heads, but the S1 will work going into the M2 frame - the location of the vertical bolt is the same. Good news is that the one on on top is superior anyway . The webbing between the the two arms will dampen vibration transmitted to the mount from the motor. While you wouldn't feel the vibration anyway, aluminum vibrated at a constant frequency will work harden and fail. I believe the "Tuning Fork" later mounts, the ones without webbing, contribute to the broken mount, broken front head bolt bolt problem.

The weird tab with the two holes hanging off the bottom one is to support a stock Helmholtz air cleaner. I have NO IDEA what that other hole is for - I looked at Veronica and that hole is unused on an 1998 S3 - and she is still stock in that area.

The reason they aren't interchangeable is that the stock heads have one hole that is 3/8". The S2s use the top mount style - the holes are a 3/8" and a 7/16" to the head where the later one is 7/16" in both holes. It turns out to be possible to make holes bigger with a hand drill.- I did that mating the 2000 engine into a 95 S2.

The bracket and the hole are for the fourth tie bar.

I was just thinking that it looked like a tie bar should be there- when was that introduced?

Well this frame is a 2000 so maybe the tie bar cam into play there.
Thanks for the info I thought the S1 looked stronger and I have never had headbt problems either

My 2000 S3 frame does have the frame boss on it too. I would guess fourth tie bar was introduced at the same time as the improved frame with the extra brace for the lower front tie bar mount.

People have reported the 4th tie bar adds a smidgen of stiffness for swift corner work, as the cost of increased vibration felt on the straights. I bought a 4th but never put it on.
Those tabs for the air mount are often ground off.
The top one looks like the same shape at the aftermarket ones available from NRHS and Hammer Performance.

This is contrary to what we did ten years ago. It is the one without the bracing I used and still do without issue. I upgraded to the later issued Buell bolt kit. I've had no issues now for more than a decade.

Take it from one who's been there.
