What have others used? In my build I am planning on an Xb front end but has anyone ever used a Honda or Yamaha front end? Other then the stem which could be pressed in what else would be a concern?

You mean, use a japanese front end off of a japanese bike instead of a japanese front end off of an american bike?

You'd be giving up the ZTL brakes if you did...

Yes that is a great description! I would be giving up the brakes but the options greatly open up. For example you can get an entire 2006 era R6 front end including all controls brakes etc for 350 I have found the same with GXSR front ends

I'm never quite certain what someone doing these conversions are hoping to gain.

Not a conversion I have an M2 frame and am building a bike from that with xb swingarm and such. I am not a keep it stock type of person everything I own house, truck, bikes, guitars are modified for my personal style and comfort. Its just what I enjoy doing.

I can dig what you are doing.

Have you found anything with a radial Brembo set-up?

If so, you wouldn't miss that ZTL set-up.

My KTM SD had it and it was shear bliss!!!

That is an excellent link. I always heard the term and seen what people called it but this ecplains it entirely and yes some of thm I have found do have this feature and they are all dual front rotors but stopping power has never been a concern as I am not a speed freak.

It's not only the fact that they have more stopping power, but the way it modulates the braking.

Couple that with excellent suspension and it gives new meaning to digging deep into a turn.

I've nothing against changing forks. I just don't think in my case it's in keeping with the ethos of the bike I bought.

The largest diameter rotor in production back then, making for just one disc and not two - saving weight.

Not sure how great an advantage in handling can be had from fitting a complete front end of a different bike. Whilst something more contemporary might be technologically advanced and better performers, I'm not convinced any such advantage is that great on the road. Track yes, but road and road tyres, a somewhat moot point me thinks.

Take an SD out on the road. If it weren't for the horrendous fuel injection KTM had installed on the bikes, at the time, I would still have it.

And this whole 'keeping with the ethos of the bike' thing going on, I would be willing to bet that if the technology of today was available when Erik was building these bikes, what was stock, wouldn't have been used...

Ken, I like where your going with this project. I am with Beardo on the a Radial Brembo set up, it would an great alternative to the ZTL. If you do go the Gixxer route without the Brembo, make sure you get something after 2003. The Tokico radial set up is much better than the old style and will do in a pinch until you spring for the Brembo package (which should be readily available for the Gixxer front end).

Good luck!

You somewhat miss my point. I'm not criticising, just saying I wouldn't change what I have, me having a highly modified but still somewhat original Buell. For me there comes a point where the bike becomes too much of a hybrid and ends up being just a Buell frame almost. If I had another Buell, or had one that was front end damaged then coming from a different place, yes anything is an option.

Going back to a Buell is a Buell. I've ridden with a friend who if you cut him in half it would say KTM through him like a stick of Blackpool rock. He has the 690 Duke, this being his second one. It's got a pipe on it and an induction upgrade and goes like stink. They're a great match for my Buell actually. I can see they handle great and corner like on rails, but the Buell is not worse. It's just different. Ok maybe not as good, but that depends how you deal with what you've got. So I'm not convinced the effort is worth the reward for a number of reasons, and not just the quest for greater handling.

As for stopping, I have that enough with a Braking wave rotor and ISR radial master cylinder, wound up so the lever is all but rock hard to feel with very little movement toward the bars. I love it this way. The set-up complements the Robby Moto quick action throttle perfectly. It's kinda like an Alpha Male bike. Non of this pussyfooting around with contemporary soft options. Steve Parish said in his Moto GP commentary just last week, a competent rider could ride a Moto GP bike to the shops they're that compliant these days. Where's the fun in that : )

Doesn't EBR have access to the latest technology? They still are made with the single side big rotor.

I put some GSXR600K7 Showas on the front of my second S1. You can read the story here:

http://www.ukbeg.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=206121# p206121

The forks are quite a bit lighter than the Buell Showa forks and A LOT lighter than the Buell White Power forks...

Pash, yes good read and nice pics, but the end result is not my cuppa tea. I don't like the radial caliper twin disc look of this arrangement. It's too much to see. Looking at a (very rare) Buell twin disc conversion, they look great having still a minimalist look about them. Overall this setup looks, well, Japanese I suppose. And for me the front hugger is completely wrong. Looks too heavy on the eye also. You can't beat the carbon fiber Buell offering. Great work though.

How does it handle compared to old, and how much do you believe the weight difference is over the Buell WP forks? I assume your weight saving is calculated on an all up fit with wheel, brakes etc?

Thanks Rocket in England, sorry its not your cuppa tea and am sorry for putting the weight on your eye.

What is this very rare Buell twin disc conversion you speak of? The additional 6 pot Nissin on the adaptor plate? The PFMs? The Pretechs? The Billets?

All of the above!

twin disc

Just a minimalist look and more in keeping with the S1's ethos as I've always understood it to be.

So, with the GSXR forks, brake hardware etc etc, how much lighter than the stock Buell WP single disc setup when all is up and running?

Saw alot of XB racers at Laguna running GSXR lowers on their Showa forks to get the twin front discs.

What I'm curious to know is the weight difference between the complete setups of the stock Showa, stock WP, and the GSXR twin disc.

I get that the WP forks are heavier than the GSXR's, but I don't know if Pash means the whole setup or just the forks.

I don't know why you all like Jap front forks, i'd be looking at Ohlans if i changed,
see the new Norton 961 has Ohlans forks Brembo radial mount brakes. hand built too.
but i'll stick with my m2, i love it & don't want to loose carb,

Threadjack---Is there a way to add another brake rotor and caliper. The stock x1 looks like there is a place to bolt it in the rim and there is a caliper bracket. I bought it like this and always wondered if it was removed for some reason...

Not sure what you think are going to get by doing this - the single side caliper was done to save weight and stops just as well or better than any other setup - it's basically a car caliper on there!
