I am hitting neutral when going from 1 to 2 and I am reading threads that indicate that there is a good chance the circlip is not holding.
Was wondering if any one has tried the Smooth Shift kit from american sport bike ?
it looks like it may solve my problem

There is a detent plate in there that, over time, wears out.

I would think that this kit would do the job.

You can trust Al and Joanne at American Sport Bike. Good people to know!

Make sure your primary chain is adjusted correctly. The final drive belt too. that will cure most false neutral shifts.

While the smooth shift kit is a nice thing for a few reasons (improved detent plate profile, better drum ramps, gets rid of that STUPID detent plate retaining ring), I'm guessing that the issue that you're having is more likely rounded gear dogs on your 2nd gear. My S1W had the same issue. I replaced those and put in the smooth shift kit at the same time and all was well. YMMV.

You cant see the dogs unless you pull the tranny out. i had this same problem and it is almost always the gear dogs. I replaced the gears and sent the whole tranny to zippers performance and had the gears backcutt.

Here is picture of what worn dogs look like: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/705891.html

I replaced one of the gears and one of the shift arms. I still miss shifts into second sometimes but at least it isn't popping in and out anymore.
