I have a 48'x48' wooden grainary on our property that I'd like to make into a shop. It has 3 16'x16' bins along each side and a 16' alley through the middle, w/ 2 16' doors, one at each end. The question involves removing two bins from either side and creting a 32'x48' work space.

After doing a bit of research I came up w/ a bridge-truss rafter design to carry the roof. Would a 32' bridge truss 5' tall made from 2x6 lumber be strong enough to carry that kind of load? The option is to purchase glue-lams at $2k each and they would only span 24'

i had a 24x40 garage built using 2x4 trusses spanning the 24 foot length. they were engineered by a company that builds them. you should be able to find info on this online or the library. good luck.

Might also need to consider what kind of reinforcement your walls may need.

Really need more details on the structural configuration.

I've actually done quite a bit of research on the intranet since posting this, discovered a "bridge-truss" configuration that should work nicely in a retrofit situation. Esentially I need to span 30' to replace the load-bearing walls where the bins were (still are now). Since the bins are currently framed in 2x6 w/ 1x8 shiplap siding I'll be able to use the lumber from the dividing walls to build the girder and only be out the money for new fasteners.

I'm pretty excited about the whole shop idea. Great and wonderful plans are afloat....heated floor, two overhead doors (one on each end) and w/ the interior wall already sided in shiplap insulation should be fairly straight forward by just blowing it in.

When its finished I'll have a 46'x30' clear space w/ an 18' alley and two 12'x12' rooms on the south end. Gobs of space for whatever I need to do (and a safe haven when I need to hide from momma).
