Howdy folks !! ...

Back again from a pretty long break off of here to pick the brains of my fellow buellers ... particularly the tuber community ... I did a quick search on here to try and shorten my list of questions or at least give me a little info but didn't really find a whole lot on this subject ...

So ... here we go ...

The facts:

I'm currently in the process of rebuilding my S1's motor ... I just received in the mail today my replacement cylinders/pistons ... The donor bike was a 2002 M2 ... My bike is a 1998 S1 ...

The questions/concerns:

I had someone point out to me that they did change a few parts from the 1999+ sporty motors (including the ones on the Buells) ... I know of a few parts did change for sure (oil pump, thunderstorm heads come standard, fuel injection on the X1, etc...) ... But to my knowledge the cylinders/pistons stayed the same ... is this true or did I just buy a new top end just so I could clean it up and resell it ... Basically will these cylinders/pistons from a 2002 M2 fit my 1998 S1? ...

Any help, advice, or straight answers would be a great help ... Thanks ...

That would depend on if it is a S1 or a S1W. S1's had lightning heads and flat top pistons and S1W's had Thunderstorm heads and different pistons domed pistons to match. Unless you have a S1W you need to use the 2002 M2 Thunderstorm heads as well.

Dave is correct. Thunderstorm heads require thunderstorm pistons (and vice-versa). Lightning (the engine model, not the bike model) cylinders and heads also need to be used as a set.

In layman's terms - if your S1 is an S1W it will have black heads, not silver. The black heads are thunderstorm heads. If your bike has silver heads, they are Lightning heads and your new M2 thunderstorm pistons will not work with them.

It's just an S1 but I have a set of thunderstorm heads for it to upgrade the motor to White Lightning spec ...

I didn't even think about the piston differences between the lightning and thunderstorm heads ... great points there !! ...

I was more concerned if there had been any changes to the cylinders/pistons themselves (thicker wristpins, different stroke or bolt dimensions) ... But if that's not the case, then this swap is good to go !! ...

Negative,
Are you working out of the "Ole England AFB"? I was stationed there back in the sixties.
