I just got the new oxy sensor for my S3 and thought I'd better drain the tainted fuel from my tank before I installed it. Pulled the fuel line loose, stuck it in the top of an empty gas can and a few drops dribbled out.

Well duh, I thought, open the gas cap. So I did. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Still no gas comes out.

So w/out the benefit of a service manual I have no idea how to drain the fuel from my tank. Any suggestions?

Thx

Either siphon or manually kick the fuel pump on (just turn the key to "run" )

Ahh, thanx. No can do the fuel pump trick untill the new sensor is installed so I don't mess w/ the onboard 'puter. Hmmm. Guess I could put the sensor in first, then drain the fuel. That shouldn't hurt anything, would it?

That would be me...adding unathourized fuel inputs. Sign, damn kids anyway.

Why can't you run the fuel pump without a sensor installed? You don't need to start the bike (which would run just fine w/o an o2 sensor) just turn the key on.

I suppose I could, just assumed that turning on the ignition would reset the 'puter and w/out the sensor in that's supposed to be bad ju-ju

Not that I know of, in fact if you unhook the o2 and ride the bike you've got like 5miles/10minutes before it will even try to access the o2 readings (ie switch to closed-loop).
if the o2 is unhooked at that point it will light check engine and stay in open-loop (ie map mode).

Turn it upside, get rid of your neighbors thorn bush, fill it with fresh and ride the tar out of it.

reminds me of a neighbor who used to dump old diesel fuel in a ditch to control weeds. worked great until some smokers moved in next door and had their own version of weed control involving lighter fluid.

As I sit here choking and gaging and drinking a glass of single malt to clean the taste out of my mouth I can safely say the gas is out. I broke out the good ol' Okie credit-card and siphoned the tank dry. Only three mouthfulls of gas before I got a good siphon going, too. At least I've got some mower gas now...

Rek,
Old school trick here, wander down to the local hardware store and get some 3/8" diameter clear tubing. Leave the garden hose siphoning for those after midnight in the wrong neighborhood borrowings. ; )

A lot of boat/outdoor shops (Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, etc.)sell this siphon thingy which is a piece of clear tubing half inch or five eighths with a (non-sparking) copper or brass check valve on the end. You stick the check valve in the tank and rattle the valve a few times and Presto! out comes the fuel. It works very well, and you can see the fuel as it works down the line. (So you can't use a mouthful of gas as an excuse for a malt anymore.)

no one needs an excuse for malt, with the possible exception of as a reward for getting thorugh the day -- or as a celebration for getting through thte day, or as preparation for getting through the day . . . .. . . . you get the picture

you can get a siphon thingie at most boating stores or lawn equipment joints -- little bulb in the middle of a hose (mikes black, but clear would be better, I"m thinkin) . . .squeeze the bulb thingie and it starts the flow ... I use mine to drain the primary rather than disassemble the bike

wander down to the local hardware store

Oh that we could idley wander down the the local store, but alas said establishment is 25 miles away and forays into town require much planning to justify the added expense. Besides I really wanted to get it done and couldn't stand the wait (at least one hour r/t)

Anyone know what the "Surgeon General's" recommended waiting period is to light up a smoke after inhaling the gas fumes???

Blow on a lighter flame.
If your breath ignites then wait a little longer.

Don't suck on the hose, stuff a rag around it to kinda seal off the open tank filler, then blow into the tank. It'll pressure up enough to start the gas flowing, then you can pull the rag away and tend the siphon till you're done.
