Rocket... Dont have the X1 anymore. Wish I did. But the S1 definitely feels way more nimble and smaller. This thing supposedly has ported and polished heads, Andrews N9 cams and a Dynatek ignition. Seat of the pants it pulls hard. Going to get a closer look this weekend.

One other thing...I think Iam going to need a steering damper. Leaned over and when getting on the throttle a little harder its a handfull. Going to have to get used to having a smooth throttle hand again thats for sure. lol

I have news for you Jeff.

Mine is the S1W, with TS heads ported by HD racing legend Dick O'Brien himself.

I too have N9's. Back in the day they were not a popular choice. Mainly I believe because it was thought by some there were clearance issues which required machining. Not so. I have Jim's Hydrosolid lifters and Taperlite adj pushrods and heavier valve springs. It's been a very reliable engine.

I run a HSR42 with Crane HI4E single fire coils etc. I've a Forcewinder 'bend' but use a larger K&N filter than the Forcewinder tapered offering. Buell Race Kit pipes and silencer.

It's a powerful and torquey motor which runs lovely and smooth all the way from low to high RPM. Puts down at least 100rwhp. It's not R1 or GSXR fast but it snaps at their heels up to around 115mph. It will pull to 140mph with favourable conditions but it's fun factor starts way way lower and can be had on tight twisty single track roads or fast flowing high speed roads. It's at home everywhere really. But it is raw. It is a beast and a handful and very much an acquired taste but all in a good way.

Is there one thing I would recommend to anyone with a hot rod pushrod Buell I haven't mentioned already? Yes there is. Get a quick action throttle on it. I went with a Roby Moto one from Italy and put it on the quickest cam from the start. I now have a throttle which turns through 45 deg and it offers engine response in both directions like never before. Acceleration is so responsive the control for popping wheelies is more akin to a motocross bike. Deceleration In can really exploit engine braking smoothly and not need brakes where it suits my style of riding. I should point out here that I have Braking wave rotors and ISR radial master cylinder which I have set very hard. Feels not too dissimilar to and old Citroen or Maserati hydrolastic system if you've ever had the pleasure. Basically there's no sponginess and it's a very sharp feel which requires a gentle to hard pull with a very progressive feel whilst the lever doesn't come back toward the bar like a conventional set-up. You need great brakes if you want to go fast!

Rocket, buying the bike used from a broker I haven't had the chance to talk to the owner but am gonna try. Want to know who did the headwork etc. Iam an ex roadracer that raced for 8 years from 2000-2008. Held an AMA pro license for 2 years. I was thinking about the quick turn throttle as well. Gonna set up my suspension too. Iam used to a firm yet progressive suspension. I weigh 190 to answer your question. and yes a beast with pin point handling you need some top of the line brakes. This is going to be a fun project for sure. Project not in that I couldn't keep her the way she is but project in getting her where I want. lol

I welcome any suggestions, comments, feedback etc on setting up this bike, what to look for in problems etc. Look forward to talking to many of you on here about this awesome motorcycle. We all know what we got, many in the industry just don't quite understand.

What are you looking to do with it? The cast swing arm might improve the handling some - that's what I did with my S1.
My old S1W went to a fellow in Norway; that was an awfully nice bike.
He said it's the only one in the country.

I'd also make sure it has the updated primary chain tensioner and front header mount.

Not really set on anything Steve but I did look into the swingarm too. Which one do you have from what year and off what bike? My bike has the updated Y header bracket already. what about the billet front engine mount? Is it worth it? I have a personal friend that's my mechanic for engine stuff and he will be going through the motor this winter. That is one thing that will be replaced is the primary chain tensioner. The bike has 14000 miles on it. It may not be in bad shape but will update for sure. I really would like to get rid of the carbon vance n hines muffler and get something else. Any suggestions. I see the Drummer gets good press.

I will need to change the fork oil and seals so I may put a different spring and maybe some valving. What about the stock rear shock? Can it be rebuilt? Thought about a Penske but you know how the money thing goes. Grabbing a set of isolators and front mount as well. I really do like the beefier swingarm and figure it would definitely make the bike handle better. What about fitment and what else needs to be changed when going to the bigger swingarm?

It's been a while since I did the swing arm but I believe it's swing arm, swing arm mounting block, shock mount and shock.
I don't recall which model the stuff came from but anything from 99-02 will work although you probably don't want the M2Low shock.
Front isolator mount is a good thing although I've been too cheap to buy 3 of them which is what I need.
I wrote to RaceTech to see about just buying a different spring and never heard back. They do offer a rebuild service but I'm not looking to send a shock in, a lighter spring would be fine for me.

I've forget more than I've done so don't take it as gospel!

I too have the X1 arm. I think you have to use the block too as there's a difference in positioning of the shock mount if memory serves. I don't use a rear hugger so filed off the mounting points for that. Ditto belt guards. Then had it polished.

I upgraded to the later Buell front motor mount. For the cost of a billet one I just wouldn't pay that when the Buell one is strong enough. I do speak from experience here as I did have my front head snap at the mounting point (documented in the BadWeB archives with pics), which lead to repair and upgrade.

I weigh more than 190 now but sod off as I'm not telling how much more, but I haven't ever weighed 190 or anywhere near since Buell ownership. The reason I asked is I have had others ride mine and report back headshake and even tank slappers! I was horrified to hear these reports but it seems they only ever applied to pilots I allowed a ride to that weighed as much as racing snakes usually do. Lightweight skinny bastardios then! I reckon 200 pounds and over you might be beyond headshake so I think you're right to fit a steering damper at your weight. I don't have the Banke frame brace but I did have a tube welded in place before I had the frame plated. That was a long time ago and I did little riding before I had this modification done so it really wouldn't be fair to say I can tell or even remember a difference, though I always liked the logic behind it.

I remember well the stock WP shock and regret to this day having it taken from me under recall. It was hard on the rebound, though I didn't in fairness to it have enough miles and time to set it up before the Showa tin can was forced upon me. The Showa does work well though. Choose shock carefully though as you need to look into the correct lengths available if you choose to change the swingarm. As for forks, I put in the Buell Race Kit springs and I liked them straight away. I could feel the difference in dive, or more like I could feel more support under braking, than stock springs offered. You'll know more than I will about this when you get a chance to use your road racing experience and bring that to the set-up. You'll probably find the headstock bearings are worn when you get the trees out. They do that so just replace with quality bearings and not Mickey Mouse items.

You should also check the BadWeB archives and other sources for a list of all the recalls. I do believe if some or all haven't been done you are still entitled as they are in place for life of the machine no matter, and Harley will have an obligation in law to carry them out. That said, I'm not at all familiar with the US law system. Just some aspects of motoring stuff which applies internationally.

Our comments show you need to be really careful here as there are quite a few differences in the mix, and from good not bad memory, the differences equate to as little as 1/2 inch in length.

Oh yeah, the S1W.
If you swap the swing arm you'll need the later fender hugger like your X1 had.
Works Performance makes a decent shock but I think they really underestimated how bumpy the roads really are.
There's another player in the shock biz nowadays but I forget who it is - Beardo wrote it up recently.

I remember now, you'll want a seat!
The old Buell Pro Series solo seat was just okay for short jaunts, the twin tail/solo section stock seats will both make you sing soprano, my old Corbin is like sitting on a board with a point in the front, I don't know what the other options are nowadays.
I've put around 14,000 miles on my S1 and I couldn't have done it without the Corbin.

If you get a Corbin put two e-clips on the seat securing screw to keep it from dropping out into the road if (when?) it unscrews from the vibration.
How do I know this one, you might ask?

And never, EVER leave your petcock on unless you want to see diluted oil shoot out from seemingly everywhere!

Ah well, I still have the solo Pro Series seat as standard fit on the S1W, with the exception I did have covered in suede a few years ago, and I've ridden a fair few miles around western Europe and never found it uncomfortable. I often wondered why so many use to complain about it but each arse is different I guess.
