I was wondering if anyone had an idea as to what this broken wire was.. It looks sorta like a ground it comes out from the bottom of the bike behind the exhaust next to the oil cooler. 2 wires come out one goes to the top of the oil cooler then second goes to a nut where it screws in(this is the one that is broken). Should I reconnect it? Or just leave it alone I am not the first owner of the bike and I know someone messed with the wiring before me because the kickstand security switch is wired off and it sorta looks like a mess. If you want pics of it I will send them through a PM because I cannot get pics up on this site to save my life.

Travis- since X1's didn't come with oil coolers from the factory, saying the wire is next to the oil cooler isn't telling us much. You need to post photos.

It's not hard to upload photos here, it's just not like at other forums. See here for directions:

There are limits on the photo size (file size and dimensions). If you want to post a larger photo, you have to host it somewhere like smugmug or photobucket and you can link it here.

I'm thinking Travis is talking about the heat sink portion of the voltage regulator. And yeah, the wire that goes to the screw is very important, and needs to connected to the screw. Preferably before running the engine. Could do bad things to various electrical stuff to have unrestrained amps/volts running around.

And please, see my comment re your question about fault codes. The service manual is worth the money.

I've got a service manual I just can't find the part I am talking about. I will try to describe it. It is on the very front of the bike mounted on the lower section it looks almost like a box and is slotted like this |||| I thought it was a oil cooler but I guess I am wrong. It is sorta down and to the left of the oil filter(looking at the front of the bike)

OK, no hope ref responding via e-mail.

Check your service manual for remove/install voltage regulator. I'm sure the drawing there is the part you are talking about. Good idea to ground the VR properly before running the engine again.

Don't worry about the sidestand switch. Most folks here remove them, as they tend to fail. As long as the previous owner did a good job of jumpering the switch wires together things should be OK.

About your other post, read chapter 4 of the service manual. Good info about retrieving codes and what they mean.
