I know that my titanium Wileyco canister is holding back the performance on my X1W so today I spent a good two hours convincing a V&H aluminum canister that it really wants to fit on there.
There's a considerable horsepower increase but you know what? It's not nearly as pleasant a motorcycle to actually ride, especially with weekend drivers in pick up trucks picking their noses and poking along.
Once the bike cools off back goes the Wileyco and that will teach me to stop being so greedy for more power!
Maybe that's why I like my S1 so much, it has a Wileyco canister which isn't the last word in power, by any means, but it sure sounds nice and mates up with the power characteristics of the motor well.

I am not greedy. I used to like more but I need less now. I think I will try a new Indian.

I hope Indian does well, I really do. Give HarLee some much needed competition.
I got the Wileyco back on and it's a much more pleasant motorcycle to ride and it's still fast enough to kill me horribly!

Not sure I understand what didn't you like about the "considerable more power". Sometimes an exhaust with a "lazy" low end torque delivery characteristic is more relaxing to ride at low throttle openings.

I have a V&H on my S1. It's a turd pipe.

As for more power, that's what the spare bike is for. Build a monster to thrash on. But keep the daily ride just that, a daily ride.

I often regret selling my Blast, for those exact "daily driver" reasons. Great gas mileage, still hit almost a ton, cruised fine on highways, super light, low maintenance, good, plain thumper fun. And it made the "big" Buells feel faster.

"I have a V&H on my S1. It's a turd pipe."

For those of us that are "technically" challenged, what is this exactly supposed to mean? More low end torque, more high RPM power, poor construction quality, etc.?
And exactly what did this comment add to the useful nature of this thread? (your words not mine).

A Blast would make an awful lot of sense for around town usage - I was thinking that exact thing today as the Sunday drivers are killing me.
How much time can I stand to coast with the clutch in?
I even had a panel truck cut me off so he could go 15 MPH up this huge hill by my house. THANKS!
The V&H on the Purple Nurple seems to like revs and lots of them, the motor is not happy just loafing along.
I put on a Buell race ignition module and that just compounded the misery around town and that bike is geared really tall, too. Ach!
Al @ American Sport Bike sent out a repack kit of it so I'll stuff it full of packing and make sure that the mounting bracket is in there really tight, maybe that will help make it a bit more civilized?
If not, I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for a 98 S3/S1W Wileyco to knock back the performance a bit.
Now I KNOW I'm getting old!

Well, see my post in a minute. Have a Supertrapp on my X1 that WAS quiet and civilized, and a loud but throaty V&H on my S1. Must have other issues on my S1, it falls on its face at above 5K RPM, but has a ton of torque at around 4K RPM. Kind of the opposite of the V&H likes RPMs posted above.

Regarding the V&H being a turd. Seems the technology, or the lack thereof, is low tech. As in, straight from dirt bike pipes in the eighties.

Here is the norm for these slip-ons. Pack material around a baffle and insert. Run until needs replacing again. The muffle is ever changing. Playing with the mixture.

So, yes, what I had to offer was relevant Kalali. Now get off my nuts...

Perhaps I should clarify that statement: I meant the V&H likes to rev on the Purple Nurple.
This is a mix and match bike with the engine from Henrik's old S3.
Somehow or other Henrik ended up with a monster of a motor which is unlike my other Buells. It's more like Mongo The Untamed which is why I shoved it in my S2.
He was buddies with Court who I believe was at Buell at the time so there's no telling.

Right around 4 grand it really winds itself up and makes the wildest noise, very similar to a Norton Commando on the gas when the exhaust note changes and it just launches itself forward.
It's kind of a dangerous thing, actually.

When you stop to think about it, the guys at Buell were pretty much nuts. A good example would be the turbocharged Firebolt project that made 150 horsepower, the company founder crashing at 100 MPH on a snowmobile, Gary Valine screwing together engines which will happily flip you over backwards, you stick a race kit on your X1 and it lifts the front end at 100 when you give it the gas, that kind of thing.
I suppose it could be worse.

My Buell become a lot more entertaining with some minor engine work. I no longer had to flog my throttle to get around.

Just swapping a muffler on its own without tuning could go either way. The difference in performance could just be perceived due to a wavy torque curve.

I might be wrong but my M2 seems faster with a stock pipe than it is with the Buell Race Header and Muffler from idle up through the midrange up to about 5,500 RPM.

The Buell Race set-up is better above 5,500 RPM but on the street most of the time I am between 3,500 and 5,500 RPM, right where the stock pipe is at its best.

The stock exhaust is VERY good, and very well-matched to a stock engine.

I am still sorting out my M2(not)L for its race exhaust. I have kept the stock exhaust...if I decide to go back. My S2 has gone back to stock...my Uly has gone back to stock...I never touched the CR...the M2 may very well go stock as well. Who knows.

The race system does breathe well. Mine (still sorting the low speed jetting) REALLY picks up about 3500...but I've had race exhausts that are strong from idle to rev limiter. My S1W is like that - if it's running...it's making power - stock engine, race exhaust system, race intake, rejetted carb. It's all in dialing it in : ) The only difference between the S1W and the M2 are the cams, and the final drive gearing. I'll get the rest sorted out...

The old V&H on my S2 had a small sliver of packing material left in it and that was it.
The Purple Nurple runs a lot better now that I finally managed to cram that big package of packing from American Sport Bike in there.
Thanks, Al!
