1997 M2. 3500Miles. Ok so when I was riding the other day I go to pull out on the road the bike revs but no movement at the tire. Feels like a major clutch slip. Got it home check cable and clutch adjustment still very little forward power. No funny noises or anything unusual but very little forward power in any gear. Pulled the primary this evening a bit of fine shavings. Figured it might be the spring plate. Pulled the clutch... spring plate is fine and disks look good. If I spin the clutch hub the rear wheel spins(on stand) however if I hold the rear wheel and spin the hub I can see the gears spin and a slight push on tire. I am guessing it shouldn't do that???? I guess it’s time to explore the other side of the bike. Never had to go this deep before, any advice?

Has the drive belt been too tight and caused a failure of the drive pulley splines?

You my friend are correct, Thank you. Hasn't been over tight since I owned it but I was a little tight when I bought it. So after pulling apart the right-side, I can watch the shaft spin and the nut spin but the lock plate and the sprocket do not. Are there splines on the inside of the sprocket that attach to main shaft? Looks as if it’s been running on nothing but lock plate for a while. Also any idea on what size that nut is?

If you are lucky it will only be the pulley that is damaged and yes it should have matching splines on the inside of it, I don't know size of nut but suggest both it and the lockplate should be replaced as well. Check that there is no play in the bearing as well because if it has been caused by an overtight belt it could have caused bearing damage if you are unlucky.

Change that seal while you're in there - it can't have enjoyed being next to metal shavings and over-tight belts.
