Hey Guys. I am now a proud owner of a triple white 98 S1W. The bike has been sitting for around the last 6 years the last 2 outside. As soon as I get her fired up I plan on pulling the motor so I can get the frame powder coated. Any tips or advice on the removal and re installation of the engine. Thanks.

The swingarm/mounting block comes off then I pull the frame/front end off the motor. Goes back together in reverse.

I made an engine stand for mine. It may not look like much, but it works:

Always a bit sad to have it in such a state

If you are only powdercoating the frame leave the swingarm and mounting block attached to the engine and lift the frame off.

And consider having another frame tube welded in before you re-paint - left front, it would add in the frame-brace type member that Erik added to later tube frames.

That's just what I would do if I were to need/want a frame re-finish.

Get a shop manual, get a parts manual and take lots of pictures as the devil is in the details during reassembly although you should be able to cheat by looking at your X1 as the big chunks will be similar.
Get the tool for squishing the piss out of the isolators as that's the difficult part of the job.
Stainless for non-critical fasteners will really dress the old girl up.
That welded on frame tube is a real good idea, too!

For the coater, make sure that they're using a hot iron phosphate immersion for the pre treatment and Morton makes the same color polyester powder for washing machines and the like.

Where is the best place to get the tool for the isolators as well as the isolators themselves?

While the search function and I do not have a very happy relationship, there is an excellent thread somewhere in there about how to make your own spreader/compressor tool for the S1 rear isolators.

Hope this helps, Dave

Tool for isolators is only needed if half assing a belt replacement. For full removal it is not necessary.

Yup.

If you're dropping the frame over the isolators (the way the service manual says to change the belt) all you'll need is a couple of thin putty knives (or similar) to help ease the frame over the lip of the isolators.
