Aren't the old paper primary cover gaskets wonderful?
My beautiful X1W has turned into the Exxon Valdez as a chunk of the paper primary cover gasket decided to poke it's nose out for some fresh air.
The Mobil 1 decided to come along for the ride and both locating dowels decided they'd had enough and went for a dunk in the draining oil.
Other than that, it's running like a champ!

In all fairness to Harley, this was only their 99th year of motorcycle production so there were still a few things to learn about gaskets.

So, the gasket lasted what, 14 or 15 years?

It hung in there for about 6000 miles before it started wreaking havoc with the garage floor.
At least it came off easily and didn't happen on a trip.

Back together, all done.
