i dropped a stock buell x1 engine in a 95 sportster trike i built, my question is i never changed the rear sprocket do i need to to get better performance? this thing runs good but it lunges when coasting in gear almost like its trying to buck you off. im running a s&s super e carb. i cant seem to find the info on buell rear sprockets, any help would be appreciated! | ||

I think the motor might be pissed its stuck inside a trike. But that's just my take... | ||

could be, its gonna have to get used to it!!! i took an 95 883 frame so it has the stock pully and belt added a bolt on trike kit and dropped in the complete x1 engine to include drive pully. its a torque monster thst will throw you off the back when u thottle down. but the bucking when coasting i cant figure out. | ||

the US X1 gearing was the same as the 883 sportster.. 27 / 61 .. the 1200 ran 29 / 61 .. I'd run 27 / 61 on a trike anyway.. | ||

the trike is a necessity from a previous bike wreck which cost me a leg 4yrs ago, at least the engine has the props of being the coolest and baddest trike around! | ||

There are alot of cool trike here is one of my favs  Notice the buckles to keep his feet locked in and the air shifter made for a handicapped person thats awesome! (Message edited by s1owner on August 19, 2013) | ||

The owner of the dealer I worked at lost his lower left leg to a drunk in a cage. Cool thing was the service manager at the time not only fixed the bike, but equipped it with a thumb operated air shifter. It kept him in the saddle. Cool stuff! | ||

pingel makes a great electric shifter (vs the air that needs constant refilling of the tank, plus the air only upshifts) good to hear you didnt stop riding due to a bad experience bud! | ||

I know it may sound counter intuitive (to you) but make sure you keep your belt real loose. Otherwise you'll seriously damage the 5th gear drive bearing or even the wheel bearing. You should be able to push down a good inch and half. Might help with your bucking if it is indeed caused by the secondary drive. Looks pretty cool. | ||

Good call, buit not necessarily the problem. The belt tension thing is sort of Buell specific due to the resting angle of the swingarm. Sportsters don't have this issue, as their swingarm is just about level with the output sprocket. At rest, the belt path is at maximum length. And movement of the swingarm causes the belt to lose tension, not gain it, as with Buells. The same may hold true for the trike, but I can't see the belt and both pulleys. Good thing to be aware of though, in case it applies. | ||

What's your RPM when it bucks? The X1 doesn't like to be below 3K RPM because of the cams. You may want to switch to Sportster cams, given the added weight of the trike components. You may get a better ride out of it, and better off the line performance. | ||

I second hoot my buell starts to yell at me at low rpm aswell lol it may be your problem at about 2500 rpm my x1 likes to buck may be amplified by the immense about of traction in the rear end lol idk all that well though. Sorry about your leg my grandfather lost his leg aswell 5 years ago(69 his age then) turned his road glide(I think not 100 pct) into a trike type by adding a side car so he can ride still and put a electronic shifter on it aswell. Both my grandma and grandpa almost died icu for a year glad to see nothing kept you down keep riding and stay safe  (Message edited by Tll130 on August 20, 2013) | ||

she pretty much bucks in any gear when your off the throttle, lower gears its worse, pretty much have to hold on to it, it just seems like it wants to go! maybe a bigger intermediate jet in the carb? | ||

in first if your just trying to coast say thru a parking lot, i have to keep the clutch held in to keep it from wanting to lunge forward( i call it bucking) soon as you give it gas its on!!! instant whiplash takeoff. clutch in no bucking clutch out no throttle bucks in every gear. anything to do with being a fuel injected engine converted to carb? | ||

its an SST kit, their outta business now, i do have the belt tight hmmm. i lost mine above the knee when i got hit at 70 mph 4 yrs ago. i dont use anything special to shift just raised the toe lever up a little. i kinda think its in the gearing because 5th seems almost like an overdrive. it likes higher rpms. im used to the low rpm harley putt! | ||

Hoot answered the question,the X1 and fuelie S3 motors don't like rpm's much under 3K because of their more aggressive cams and lighter weight flywheels. If you want to use the motor like a cruiser install sporty cams. | ||

Any H-D should never have the idle set below 1000 RPM !!! | ||

You have to remember that the X1 engines have a lighter flywheel too. The whole shebang would probably be better off with a mostly stock 1200cc sportster engine. On a heavy vehicle, heavy flywheels would be preferable. perhaps stronger compression ratio and a nice low end cam set too. | ||

One other thing, if you still have that 883 engine, perhaps you can modify that one with monster flywheels while you continue to ride with the X1 for the rest of the season. | ||

spent the day testing theories and i believe at lower rpms the engine isnt getting enough fuel! soon as you throttle on it and before it has a chance to rev up the bucking stops immediately, and if the rpms are up to shifting revs and you let off the bucking starts about half way back to idle | ||

Buck I've been riding my bike all day today trying to figure out if the same thing is happening to mine (fuel injected 2000 x1) I think the issue is the design of the x1 engine combined with the fuel It is most likely a double shebang. The sound I think you are talking about that ur cruising at sounds under 3000 rpm to me which well As mentioned buells don't like at all in first gear I have to do the same exact thing as you or I'm gonna put my front wheel in the air same in second aswell then it settles down a bit from there up. I would suggest if you could finish riding the season out(if you don't have anoter bike and can live with it) then during the winter switch it over to more of a sportster 1200 and that should fix your cruising problem you should be able to enjoy that nice low thump that ur looking for |
