So, I have been trying to match the frame color for the 1996 S2T restore I am embarking on. I am having little or no luck posting in the S2 section, so I thought I would post in "Old School".

Previous discussion: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/717455.html?1375266740

So I received the sample chip (RAL 7024) from Drylac today in an effort to duplicate the frame color. Swing and a miss and getting frustrated.

I tried a PM to court (the person who probably possesses the most inside knowledge of Buell that I know of), but no response. Nothing from Al at American Sport Bike either. 1313 is trying to help, but I think he is running into the same cone of silence.

K12pilot even offered to send me his "kick" from his recent S2T find to help match the color, because my frame is really weathered and not a good example for a color match.

HD Corporate, even EBR, no answers, no help and no interest. I tried Classic Coatings in Sheboygan, they said they didn't paint the frames in 1996 and that the powder was a PPG product, not Drylac.

And in desperation, I tried the custom Harley shops who say they can match anything, mention Buell and you get crickets or "why don't you build a chopper?".

Am I the only one who has ever tried to get powder (or a reasonable facsimile there of) for a 96 S2T?

Thank you for reading my little rant and thank you to those who are trying to help.

Any ideas or suggestions, no matter how trivial would be helpful and appreciated. I am all ears.

Kc,

I just responded to your last Email with about the only other option I can possibly think of to get this information from someone that may know from back in the day.

Let us know if it's fruitful or not,

Contact Morton Powder (like Morton Salt, when it rains it pours).
That's who I used to use when I owned a coatings shop.

Kc,

Have you been able to figure out anything further on this?

If/when a solution is found, it would be great to somehow capture this on BadWeB so others won't have the same difficulties...

Nope, trail stopped with the coater Ad-Tech. I spoke with the production Manager who was was around in 1996. However, they have no record of the color name or code. Also he said the colors used in 95 and 96 were custom mixed by a manufacturer (could not recall the name) who was purchased by Sherwin Williams.

He was not too fired up about talking to me about it.

So I am afraid it looks like that train has sailed...

Call sherwin Williams I'm sure they have to have a record of it somewhere if need be I have a strictly auto paint sherwin Williams near me I could call and try and pump some info out of although the records would probably be kept in corporate somewhere but if they mixed it once I'm sure they can mix it again

Update: spoke to sherwin Williams the lady said she couldn't look up anything that old in her computer(at store) she referred me to a "color right distribution" out of PA contacted them he said he had no color codes for the buells at all but he said if we can get a name of the color or if that color was used on another H-D bike and they tell you the year and model he might be able to locate a color for us. Also the lady at sherwin Williams said that maybe there is a slim chance corporate would keep a record on the paint code for it.

I can't get s straight answer on the name of the color. The colors named so far:

A. Gray
B. Charcoal Gray

The parts book lists the wheel colors as Gray, White, or Aluminum (PM).

Hell, I may give up and rebuild a thunderstorm motor I have in my shop, paint the frame and wheels Nuclear Blue. Shoot the body work, bags and lower fairing Ice White Pearl and call it an S2T-W. But, I digress...

Thanks for all of your help!

At K12: "No worries.... I'll b home soon" he said sitting on the beach, sipping from a tall drink with an umbrella and fruit garnish...

Could it be gray or no? I haven't seen any pics. And if you have a chip of the paint it can be matched perfectly I know a couple people that do that. Even the sherwin Williams near my house can do it

Yes, it could be called GRAY.

The paint on mine is not a good candidate for a match, really faded and scratched. K12 is sending me his kickstand to attempt a color match which I will try hear in Kansas City.

I will keep you posted on any developments...
