I'm in the process of putting an XB top end on my 97 M2. I have been told the SE .536 cam won't give me anything over the SE .497 cam unless I have the heads ported. As I understand it, the stock lift on the XB's are .551? Is someone just trying to sell me service work? Or will this cam make a difference on stock XB heads over the .497 cam?

Thanks!

Mike

I ran 0.536's in a set of modded 1200S heads on my 1200S sporty which was used as daily transport as well as running 11's.
I then put some XB cams into those same heads and didn't make as much power as with the 0.536's

The 0.497's are an N4 and are the same cams that come stock in S3's and X1's.

With a mild port clean up on a set of XB heads I would expect more power out of the 0.536's

BUT

the advantage of the bigger cams is more overlap which means the exhaust has more control over the power and they also tend to push the curve higher up the rev range..

N4's are great for mid range and street use. 0.536's are great if you're chasing overall numbers and don't mind revving it.

What are you going to be using the bike for and what exhaust do you have on it and how much time and parts do you have to fine tune???

I have a factory race exhaust, race ignition, Mikuni 42 for it. I commute on it, but like to tear it up in the nearby canyons. I also have the option of putting Andres N8 cams in it. I think those are basically the N4 with the N6 exhaust cam and I have been told the N8 would be a good option for this motor as well.

Prefer the 0.536's to the N8's.

N8's aren't much of a step over the N4's, the advantage with them for a lot of people is there low lift. You don't have to worry about rocker arm clearance and things like that..

The thing to look at is that basicly the only thing the cams do is change your timing events which changes the effect the exhaust and intake has on the motor... You have to tune the WHOLE combination to get the best out of it.. That's from the aircleaner to the muffler outlet. Different cams will work better with different combos at different rev ranges.
The trick is to match it to suit you. Damn near impossible when it's a customer...
