It's kind of the elephant in the room, so it's good to get some objective information out there.

Q1
=======================================
Is it possible to remove and replace the cam cover without removing at least one rocker box? Maybe.

Will it put very high and unusual loads on the cams and the soft metal cam bushings? Yes.

What's do you gain as a result? 20 minutes to pull off one rocker boxes, if you can make it work.

Q2
=============================
Is it possible to remove the cam cover with only one rocker box removed? Yes.

Will it load up the cams or cam bushings? No, not if you do it right.

What are the drawbacks? The factory timing marks on the cams may not line up correctly, which can make it confusing to check or reset the cam timing.

There. No drama, just the facts. : )

Forums are an interesting place..

What we don't often see is the years of trade experience of some compared to others. Personally I'm trade qualified and have many years running engine reconditioning workshops. One learns what will and wont work. More often than not from what customers bring in after they've had a go at it first.

Yes. it can be done and no it doesn't damage the inner cam bushes (or bearings if you're doing a 4 speed) but yes it's a good idea to set the motor where it has the least amount of pressure on the cams. The force at zero revs is nothing compared to the force at 7000 rpm. As I said I've replaced a couple of oil pump drive gears / drive keys without removing rocker boxes and yes that means removing the rear intake cam and putting it back in while it still has some spring pressure on it... and yes there's a few trade tricks involved.

If you're not sure or have any doubt then follow the manual as it will keep you out of trouble. As these have usually been developed to limit the chances of mistakes being made and are still the best starting point.

It's just nice to know sometimes what is possible from those that have actually done it especially on the internet.

Good post. As a data point, I did try it. I chickened out when I got to the "paint scraper as a lever" phase.

It's just 20 minutes to pull the rocker box.

Reepi. sometimes you don't have that 20 minutes when you've got bikes stacked up in a workshop and one comes in with a problem and the guy needs his ride asap.

It's also usually new gaskets on the bill too.

It all adds up.

btw reepi. have a look in the XLForum archives. I'm stevo on there and wrote jetting 101 in the early days of that forum to help guys out, plus heaps of other stuff... but I got sick of the politics and struggle to just try and help people.. especially when you're doing it during the day for living.

We're all hear to pass knowledge around and help each other out where we can.. I learn a lot of bits about Buells on here as most of my experiance is on sporties and Buells have some strange idiosincrasys to say the least.. : )

But it is theoretically possible, if one were in the middle of the Gobi desert and had only one new rocker cover gasket and a cam cover gasket, to put the front at TDC, remove the front rocker cover and rocker arms, rotate the motor to TDC on the rear, and remove the cam cover without any valve springs pushing on any cams, so long as you leave it at rear TDC long enough to bleed the lifters down before removing the case.

Side pressure is bad for bushings and even lifters can cause it when only one side is supported.

Now that Gobi Desert Harley Davidson-Buell closed down. I guess you'd have to.

They had to close. With the militants and jihadists and all, Bumfukt, Egypt is no longer the tourist heaven it became famous as in the fifties. They sold their last biker-babe-burkha back in January.

There's a closeout sale on their patented bomb-in-a-gas-tank on their website. They won't ship to addresses in Israel.
