I tried in the classified section...no bites.....thought maybe this would get more of a response.

I love riding the s1 but it burns the right leg. Anyone have a header heat shield they are willing to let go of......willing to pay. Even went to the dealership....
The part is discontinued

Silver ceramic should help. I did it and it seemed to make a noticeable difference in the amount of heat i felt. If you want to give me your header I can get it done for you for about $65 close to where I work. Otherwise i can look around and see if I still have my heat shield. I live in Aurora, so less than an hour down I-88.

I can't remember the term, but it's true that shiny, bright surfaces emit less heat than dark surfaces, so polished headers or silver ceramic coating would help.

For the heat shield, did you try St. Paul HD's ebay store? They are the dealer that ha(s) or ha(d) all the old tuber parts up for sale... It has been a while, but I did remember seeing some header heat shields there.

Otherwise, it's like that scene in World's Fastest Indian, where he uses some asbestos from an old electric blanket, and wraps his leg inside his leathers...

I have even considered adding a large pocket into the right leg of riding pants, and inserting a piece of heat shield fabric.

Or, just HTFU (LOL).

Buelljunkie, I have it wrapped now with the heat wrap. Felt little to no difference. If you could locate your heat shield, that would be great!!! I will be in Sugar Grove, Il this Saturday.

Gianni-PM me your phone #. I'll be around Sat, maybe you could swing by. If you're going to Sugar Grove you'll be taking I-88, you could just jump off at Eola Rd..I'm a few miles south. I'll be up early...

S1owner-Shouldn't be a problem. I've used this shop 3 times for ceramic coating, all within the last month. That being said I can't speak for durability/longevity, and I do not know what process they use, but after a couple of rides I have seen NO discoloration anywhere.
I believe he gave me that price because of the quantity I said I would bring him if I was happy with the first one. The last header I brought him was an S2 pipe which had previously been ceramic coated, and had marks where the old heat shield was. I spent the time to sand it smooth and got a much better result. It seems that the popular belief is that you can give a shop a pipe in any condition and the oven and blasting will have it come out looking perfect...I do not believe this to be true. As with any finish it's all in the prep, and I personally don't think most shop employees will take the same care or have the same vested interest and undying love for my bike that I do! They are most likely not the perfectionist I am. The ceramic coating is relatively thin and surface imperfections will most likely be visible, so I would recommend spending some time to help your own cause. Still, even if it's not perfect you can't beat $65! Jet-Hot wants $165 plus shipping 2 ways. I have a new header/muffler set coming, and I am going to send it to Jet-Hot to have coated...it's the only way to know if there is a difference. I'm sure part of the cost difference is due to their lifetime warranty. Nothing but the best for our Buells, right? If you want to do the $65 thing, I'll get you my address and you can ship them over. Whatever it costs to ship to me just send a check for that amount(or PayPal me) and I'll take care of it.

Ive used Jet Hot coating 3 different times now on different bikes and have been extremely happy with their work. that being said, if you can get it for 100.00 cheaper.. then it simply becomes a question of quality. let me know how it works out, I have a few more bikes that need exhaust ceramic coated and if the quality is great I could sure use the extra money in my pocket. again though, as far as Jet Hot, they have done great work on my stuff if anyone is wondering about their quality.

Jolly-thanks for the info on your experience with Jet-Hot. I'm going to give them a try at least for the sake of comparison. I have limited experience with ceramic coating, but I've never seen it have a mirror-like finish. I don't mean like chrome...I mean in terms of smoothness. There always seems to be a negligible amount of orange peel.

S1owner-hey, just to clarify - that check I was asking for was for the return shipping if you wanted me to bring your header to be coated...I would never charge labor to help out a fellow BadWeb'r!

Gianni312-I found the heat shield! it's yours if you want it. I should be home today, you can come by if you like. just give me a call...
