Relatively new to Badweb. I have been looking around the forums for a few months as I intended buying a Buell. Fortunately my 1998 M2 Cyclone found me!
Previous owner unfortunately passed away suddenly and the baby sat for a couple of years. I have had it for a couple of months and am blown away by the great condition of the bike. So far I have given it a fluid change, adjusted the primary chain to 3/4" and checked heeeeeaps of stuff.
I have a stack of parts on order from American Sport Bike, (thanks Al), but in amongst it is the Factory service manual - not a big drama, but I think that the previous owner was getting it serviced by a dealer and the drive belt is in the same state as the primary chain was...TIGHT, (Factory spec I am guessing).
I need to adjust it asap and am wondering if anyone can give me a run down on the easiest way. I can suspend the rear of the bike no probs, and have all necessary tools. Also need torque settings for axle bolts and anything else that needs to be loosened. I have looked at a '99 FSM, but it has a different swingarm and adjustment setup. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Goto the knowledge vault and download the 97 lightning manual for free that will give you your torque ratings and such. Do not follow factory belt settings you need your belt scary loose as they say aroung here

Had to find the UK manual as the other one will only download intro, but was worth its weight, thanks heaps, jobs done, belt is looooooose as. I can now keep riding until my carb parts etc. turn up without trashing the belt and bearings, and then....any tips on rebuilding these funny lookin' carbs and changin' brake pads...hehe

Buellistic has a great "how to" that explains the best way to adjust the drive belt.

If you use his method your belt will last a long time.

The one in the knowledge vault only looks like the intro click on the links it will bring you there at least thats how it used to be

Thanks Dave, I bookmarked Buellistics belt theology and doctrine about a month ago and that is the method that I used - worked a treat.
Nice S1 Ken:-) I don't know why, but that manual just will not work for me. It might be a software issue? There was a link in the same forum to a UK one that worked fine. Hopefully I will get my FSM at the same time as my brake pads, carb gear and shock to make life just that little bit easier...
