Just bought a buell s1 1996 the rear cylinder has no compression was wondering if there is anyway to lower the motor a little to get into it to change the piston and stuff or does the motor have to come completely out of the bike?

The cylinder studs go all the way through cylinder, so you'd have to drop it quite a bit to get to the piston if that is the problem. I've never tried it that way-

I think you maybe might could get the front that way if you released the front and top mount - but you're about half way to dropping the engine at that point anyway. Because the rear is closer to the pivot point, I don't think you could get that one that way even if you made the rear work.

But this is all theoretical, because I haven't tried.

No compression could just be a floated valve - if the valve didn't kiss the piston, you could just rebuild the head.

Was this the S1 with the two offset vertical headlights that was discussed in classifieds?

There's absolutely no reason you can't do what you are proposing with the engine still in the bike.

I've done it that way with my S2 at least 2 times. The only time I've ever needed to pull the engine was to install the lightened S1 flywheels.

If you've got the service manual it's covered pretty well,

you can pull rear cylinder with motor staying where it is right now
dumb to drop it for that reason

Yep - my bad. I actually pulled out the service manual and it states same. Dlease disregard earlier post. Top end can be done with engine in frame
