So I got this S2 itch which I have been trying to scratch by purchasing a complete unmolested copy. I have seen several candidates, some really nice and on the high end of 5K and some that are rough, but complete in the $2K area.

Any thoughts on the realistic market values and what I should be looking to pay. BTW, I think 5K+ is way out of the ball park, am I wrong?

Thanks.

Tough question. I'll try to answer with another question.

In your profile, it says you did a restoration on an S1W. That probably cost you a bunch of money. What do you think you spent on the bike and restoration? Be honest. Would you pay somebody that amount of money to just buy the bike, all finished with a tank of gas and a fresh wax job?

If you find a bike set up the way you want it and in the condition you want it, $5K might not be out of line. I think prices are all over the place on Buells. There are bargains out there but, they rarely are set up the way you want them.

I overpaid for my S2 by an easy $1,500. That's the short answer if you believe Kelley Blue Book values.

If you dig deeper, it had a brand-new 1250 top end kit, new battery, brand new Pilot Road 2 tires (my first choice), new PM grips, with Heat Demons grip warmers, a freshly upholstered seat with an integrated heater. The oil was just changed. The brake fluid was fresh and bright purple. The frame actually had a coat of wax on it.

When I got it home, the sole problem it had was a broken ground wire on the tach. I fixed that and rode it. Any regrets? Not one.

On the flip side, are there people asking way too much for them because they have a Signature Series plate and think it's worth a million bucks, despite cracks and chips in the bodywork, a tired, leaky engine and bald tires? You bet. You have to shop and know when you've found the bike you want to pay for (or the project you're willing to take on).

Either way, I'd like to have a stable full of S2s, one in every color--two if they needed rescuing. Just a damn fine motorcycle. People will someday answer for parting out these amazing motorcycles.

This is the night mine came home.

Greg, thanks for the insight. I have my head on straight now and know where I am going with my latest obsession. BTW, after reading your post I went through my receipts for the restore and it came to roughly $8K (give or take) plus the cost of the bike which brings the total up to or over the original 1998 price when new.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
