Howdy, went to swap out this batt. and that sucker is in there! What's the better way to access those retaining straps, w/o tearing the whole rear plastic assembly off?

I use a 1/4" ratchet and several extensions to reach in there.

Aha, that nut on the clamp is inaccessible from whoever last did the install, but I believe I understand what you are getting at.

Goofy shit.

Yup, Shorais list at $250 for the '02 S3T. The Wal-Mart EverStart is actually an AGM kit battery. Now, I'm a little confused as I have 3 different battery tenders, one of which I've been using on my sealed units, which BT states is for "gel" batteries only.

Should I just use the Standard battery tender on the AGM, or the one for gel batteries? Nothing specified in the EverStart manual on what kind of charger, only to avoid using one that's more than 2 amps.

Anyway, for all the rest of the S3T battery changing noobs: seat off and you can peek in from above on left side as you run the 10mm socket up to the rear of the retention strap's nut, from the rear tire area. Sneak the extension/socket through the oil lines, and you may have to get a couple fingers in there to push one of em gently aside.

Capture that nut in socket, pull out, gently manipulate the strap away to the right side of bike. With some finnagling the battery will come out the left side-I had to gently lift up the plastic seat cowl portion to get it out.

Wally world unit was $75 + tax- $5 core charge refund, blablabla...

You ought to call these guys. I've been buying batteries from them since 1984.

They manufacture their own batteries. And, they last a long time!

Seat off, it's 4 torx screws and the tail section bodywork is off.

Just sayin'.

Wait.

I lied.

Loosen the 1/2" bolt holding the rear of the tank down, so you can lift it off the front of the tail section.

Wally's neverstart is a AGM gel battery. I have had two fail, now I use Interstate.

Watch that the battery hold-down strap doesn't contact the tip of the positive battery cable.

ES20LBS is a gel? That's where my confusion is as I see agm = glass mat, and nothing to do with "gel". Wish these technical writers could pull their heads out and get basic language down for some sort of conformance in terminology...wtf...

Rat: I went that route at first and it did not work- 4 torx, 1/2" on tank, 3 screws on lock plate, and there was still more to come off somewhere before it would come off. Is there just rubber grommets holding it on, after all that?

Alright, I got a bad feeling on this batery already...

I take the tail light lens out when I take mine off, makes it easier.

You are correct, it's a saturated mat, not a gel. The indicator is that you add acid to a mat and a gel is a gel from the factory.

I glued my taillight lens to the body years ago. It's no trouble to loosen the gas tank and remove the body screws as often as I need to change taillight bulbs. It rattled.

I've been using the "MagnaPower" AGM exact fit battery from Advanced Auto parts. You can order from them online. They can ship AGM batteries ready to use.

You should make sure that your battery tender is safe for AGM. Some are and some are not. Look up your model, call them and ask. I ride everyday so I don't have a tender.

OK, talked with the DelTran people with Battery Tender: the "gel" specific BTs are for the BMW Exide batteries.( Back from our BMW days, long gone.) The AGMs are NOT like a gel, but the gel chargers can be used on them-they just will not bring an AGM up to 100% charge. AGMs are to be charged with their BT Plus models for 100% charge. Thanks all for your helping too.
