You find the tight spot by taking the inspection cover off, removing the spark plugs, putting the bike in high gear, and rolling it while lifting the chain with your finger every few inches of its travel to check slack. You'll find the tight spot - that's where you want 1/2 to 3/4 inch of play.

Too loose is better than too tight as long as it never slaps the case. That makes a grinding sound.

Would a half inch at not the tightest spot, say, the loosest spot, still be too tight? I definitely didn't do all those things to find the tight spot, though I did move the bike around some while testing the slack.

The PRIMARY CHAIN if not adjusted to 3/4 inch on the chain tight spot it will be TOO TIGHT !!!

IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE THIS JUST LOOK AT HOW DEEP THE GROVES ARE IN THE PLASTIC ON THE CHAIN ADJUSTER !!!

Buellistic has a point. If you set it a bit too tight it will adjust itself by cutting grooves into the adjusting shoe. Until it rips the yellow pad off the shoe and lodges it above the clutch basket.

Humor me. Watch it for a few seconds while it is running. If it seems to be shaking, it is too tight. The book lies shamelessly about primary tightness and final drive belt adjustment. If you set your drive belt as tight as the book says, your right swing arm will be coated in primary oil within 10K miles from the failed sprocket seal.

The correct specifications are: Primary chain, seriously loose. Final drive belt, scary loose.

Absolutely. You also need to do it with the engine stone cold. Take your time and do it right, once. This is one area where short cuts can get very expensive. The correct slack is 3/4 inch total travel/play.
