Hello to all,

I was riding my 99 x1 lightning today and I had noticed I am not getting a good throttle response (lagging) and some burping out the intake. When i got home I idled the bike for a few minutes while I plugged it into ECM spy and all of the sudden it died. I started it up again and it did the same thing after 5 seconds or so. My AFV is reading 90 which is a normal tolerance but my fuel pressure is reading at 40-45 psi which should be around 55 PSI.

Im sure its my fuel pump, but I wanted to be sure first before I dropped $370.00 on a new one. Thanks gang.

Replace your ETS. Lots cheaper. It's a "replace" item on your bike. Easy off/on.

Al at American Sport Bike has them.

90 is a bit on the lean side. If the pressure was lower, less fuel would be squirting in during the same open duration.
Therefore, the AFV should read high as it's trying to compensate for lack of fuel.

Since you have ECMspy, turn on the bike with a cold engine and look at the temperature readings for the intake air and the engine.
They should both be the same as whatever temp the weather makes it.

TWO_SEASONS: I replaced the the ETS about 3 months ago. Im assuming that is working fine. Yet, my luck the new one would be nackered.

NATEXlh1000: They are 1 degree off so im assuming that is not the issue, but I did discover that my AIT is zip tied to the frame between both cylinder heads...I have to move that back in the intake. Can't believe I just noticed that.

The one thing that im noticing that is tripping me out is that at 3.5K to 4K rpm im only showing im at 11.5 volts, maybe 12. But I don't even think i've seen above that. I just charged my battery because my ECM was showing 10.5 volts at the same RPM range. Should I consider a new voltage regulator, as the battery is 6 months old?

Run an alternator output test, then the regulator test, confirm both work,
the ECM spy readings for voltage tend to be low.

ECMSpy voltage readings are generally not accurate. I would use a more reliable voltmeter hooked directly to the battery.

If you find it is the fuel pump, you don't have to replace the whole thing. It could be the pressure regulator, the filter, or the pump motor itself. All three of these things are replaceable for way less then a new pump assembly.
