Hey everyone. After riding for about 20 minutes at highway speeds, the S3t starts to spudder and lose power momentarily. I've read quite a few post related to this problem.
I have purchased the plug and cable for ECMspy but when I go to the ECMspy site to download I am overwhelmed and don't really have a clue. I think I may need a TPS reset. I'm wondering if anybody in the Bay Area Ca, works on Buell's and can do this for me. Of course I'm willing to compensate and can come to you. I'm in the Hollister area.
I'm not sure why this problem started happening. The only thing I did notice different was my muffler started to come loose. I tightened it back up but I think there is some separation at the between the connecting tube and the muffler itself.

I forgot to mention that the engine light comes on and goes off comes on goes off.

Thanks

I'm not sure on the early fuel injection...but if your muffler came loose I'd recommend loosening and re-tightening the ENTIRE exhaust system from the head ports out. Loosen every nut on the system. Torque the rear head. Grab the header and jiggle it so it settles into place. Torque the front head. Jiggle it all again. Torque the collector hangar. Jiggle. Torque the muffler to header joint. Jiggle. Torque the rear hangar.

Something coming loose and being retightened is a perfect recipe for misalignment and cracking parts.

You could have an engine temp sensor going bad causing the sputter. Any trouble codes present?

I don't have ECMspy so I don't know about any trouble codes. If I had it I would not know how to use it. I'm really just trying to find someone in the Bay Area Ca. That is proficient at working on these bikes, and would be able to get the trouble codes and do a tps reset.

If you are planning to keep the bike for a while, you're much better off to bite the bullet and learn how to use the ECMSpy software. I'm sure there are plenty of folks here who can walk you through the process.
Drop me a PM when you're ready...

I am in the bay area, and just dropped my $$ for ECM Spy (and the cable). It will be a learning adventure for me as well on my 2000 S3T as my only other experience with this sort of software is my Dynatec 2000i on my sportster (which I have only monitored and not made any real adjustments to).

I have a friend that works on all of his Buell's and recommended ECM Spy to me. I will talk with him and see if he would be willing to meet up and do a quick instruction for both of us for the price of lunch or something.

Let me know if you are interested.

So.. thanks to Yo Barry and his knowledge of ECMspy we were able to determine the problem code, it seems the engine temp sensor is bad.. got one ordered up from http://www.lshd1.com/servlet/Detail?no=1012849 it's part #P1278.k and I also ordered the special socket needed to install it. https://www.ironmachine.com/search?q=socket
I will be setting up ECMspy on my laptop soon.

You will probably need to get a 'bullet' connector for your new ETS. The chances are you'll get one with the new style connector & your 02 has the bullet connector or at least my 02 had the old style. I just cut the new one off and crimped on the bullet connector and good to go.

I finally rec'd the ETS (engine temp sensor) and the special socket you need to remove it. I replaced it and the bike no longer sputters.. very nice. I do notice the engine light still going on and off from time to time. Thanks for all your help and especially to Yo Barry.

I chased down a sputtering/skipping issue a year ago. After replacing the ETS, O2 sensor, header gaskets, checking/cleaning practically all electrical connections, checking the full wiring harness for chaffing, and buying ECM spy to check everything to no avail, it turned out to be a $35 ignition switch.

Here's how I found it. Stopped to put gas in and when I turned the ignition on to leave, the key wouldn't turn; had to trailer it home. After replacing the switch, it has run perfectly ever since. I had noticed a few times that the lights wouldn't come on or would flicker when I'd turn on the ignition, but it took the switch failing to find my skipping issue after chasing the wrong rabbit for several months.
