I recently rebuilt the top end of my X1 after getting the pushrod cover seals to not leak it ran fine. Up until it became noisy and the oil light came on. And it will not stay running. I took off the rear valve cover. And noticed the exhaust was not lifting. Any body know what might have happened? I have not looked at the front yet. The only thing I can think of is that the cam gear pin sheared. Don't know? But I don't know too much about the engine so?

1. Loss of Oil pressure?
check Oil pump gear,
pump is under the cam chest, rh side.
2. Plan on removing both rocker boxes, carefully remove the outer timer cover then the cup, the pickup can be left in the cover after unbolting it from the timing cavity ( let it hang by its wires,) remove the cams note the timing marks for line up,
You are looking for metal debris, and damage to the oil pump driving gears cam lobes and journals, bushings.

Remove the retaining pins and remove the lifters one at a time noting orientation and location in the engine, I would visually inspect them for ANY signs of scoring and damage to the rollers.
also look at the bores that they slide in check for damage,

the noise was likely from loss of oil pressure, IF you find metal fragments, remember to clean / replace lines and clean out the tank as well as a complete inspection of the various parts including the crank for play and damage.

Sorry to hear that this has happened to you
I hope that you caught it in time.

My list is not comprehensive, If you have a factory manual spend some time in it before starting this work.

The oil pump gears are a known problem area in SOME engines, a bronze gear was made for '06 and later bikes it fits the x1 and is worth the $$

Hydraulic lifters need oil to lift the valves open.
Drain the oil tank, drop the oil pump to check the drive gear.
