this has been discussed a lot on this forum and I cant seem to find the article that addressed it... so here I am asking the same old question again....but I think the trick for finding TDC with rocker box covers removed for the cylinder you are working on is to lift the rear wheel off the ground and slowly rotate the rear wheel watching for the intake push rod to drop, then try and wiggle the rockers..if they slightly wiggle or slide back and forth you have that cylinder at TDC with no pressure on valves (valves fully closed - no pressure on push rods)... correct?? thanks for answering the obvious.....my S3t is leaking oil from what appears to be a push rod tube at rear cylinder and rear pushrod...might as well do the rocker box conversion while I am at it.....

Remove the timing plug,rotate the rear wheel and have a look see.

Since you are not trying to set the ign timing, there is Plan B.

When the intake pushrod drops, stick a straw, or similar (make sure it is long enough that if you drop it it won't disappear into the combustion chamber) through the sparkplug hole and continue to turn the rear wheel in the direction of travel. You will be able to feel when the piston gets to TDC and starts back down.

that's what I remember its at the intake pushrod drop, all I'm trying to do is unload the rockers to pull the rocker boxes. did a rocker box swap on my s1 about 2 years ago without any incident and forgot the one little simple trick.

Wasn't the S3t fuel injected? Does it cycle the fuel pump at TDC like the XB does?

mine is a fuel injected year..and I do not know the answer to that question....

Turn on the ignition, put it in 5th, and rotate the rear wheel and you will know quickly. : )
