Hi:

My '99 Thunderbolt has an intermittent short that blows the fuse (yellow) when I make a low speed left turn. Like in a parking lot. I may drive for a day or an hour. It is not predictable. I have had all the plastic off and cannot find a bare wire or loose connection. Anyone have some advise?

Thanks,
Tim

What does the fuse control? That would help with troubleshooting...

FWIW, My X-1 would drop all of the instruments, turn signal, ect on a random basis. No blown fuses. Re-routed the wiring harness 'branch' that runs across the top of the oil tank to remove a very sharp turn in the harness, that solved the problem.

In your case, since the fuse only blows when making a sharp, low speed left turn, look for a pinched (or pulled) wire in the area of the steering stem. And as Ratbuell says, pay particular attention to the wire(s) that are associated with whichever fuse is blowing.

Hope this helps, Dave

Concur with the above. You problem (shorting wire) is probably located from just behind the steering stem all the way up to the left side control assy (turn signal, horn, flash to pass).

I would remove the tank and pull all associated body panels off and trace it out from the fuse box. Visual inspection (slowly) should tell you a lot.

These harnesses are tight, so it will be difficult to spot. But the short will probably be on the outside of the harness bundle.

Another thought, quick and easy:

Given you bikes calander age, try removing all of the cable tie-wraps from the wiring harness from the front of the tank forward, and replace with new. Just don't put the new straps in exactly the same place, and don't put them on too tight. Could solve the problem.
