My bike has always been an oily mess, and I've long thought it was because my breather tube dangled down somewhere near my belt.

Here's what I made:

It's a 6.5 oz bottle from the 60's or 70's – I now know why they called them "coke bottle glasses", because this glass is very thick and stout. I'll get another hose clamp to go around the top, but for the moment used a zip tie.

Some folks might think glass is a bit dangerous, which it might be, but I ride a motorcycle for chrissakes.

For now it'll be a bit of a pain to drain (I'll need to remove the hose clamps), but maybe I'll drill a hole in the bottom and add a petcock some day.

Also, I should have gotten a red cap, but found a green cap lying around. Oh well

tried a similar idea with a glass JD miniature bottle..
...ran up to the Ace cafe London around 60miles from me, 70-100mph
it pressurised itself, due to insufficient space around the neck , then pissed oil out all over the rocker covers , you may be OK but keep an eye on it

My catch can is a plastic over size spice bottle with a reinforced lid that supports three nipples. The XB rocker pcv's join and lead into nipple one. Nipple two receives the trans vent line. Nipple three leads up the tail to a vent under the tail light.

The bottle hangs alongside the lines from the oil bag and besides the screw on aspect is kept in place with a loose fit oversize zip tie. when I need to drain slip the zip tie off and unscrew the bottle.

@Totalnutah Ah, hadn't thought of that. Maybe I can poke a hole in the side of the bottle to plumb in the pressure release tube... or just pick a different container if this goes to hell. Thanks for the heads up though, I'll keep an eye on it.

@Dannybuell, sounds super practical! Got any pics to share? I'm always curious to see where people mount these things.

there is a slick aluminum catch-can sold by pegasus racing. it was only 15 bucks or so a few years ago. a lot of folks here use that. not as original as a glass bottle but does the job correctly and won't shatter all over your leg. google them.

I saw a clever guy on here put a bristle brush in his catch can to help condense out the oil mist.

Why a catch can? Why not direct the breather pipe into the exhaust exit?

puking oil is bad on the roadway it's slippery, downstream fisheries get oil with runoff.

Sorry Kilroy, exit meaning in fresh air, but into the exhaust stream, the exhaust then blows anything breathed out into the atmosphere (along with all the harmful exhaust gases).

I take your point Dannybuell, but most of the stuff blown out is water and as yourself or anyone else with a catch can will tell you, it doesn't fill up much.

To me, catch cans look an ugly afterthought regardless of how much billet/CNC/posh bottle etc. is used.

Emptying a catch can is just something else to do, and when you empty it, where do you empty it? In the waste oil pan? Or at the side of the road?

yes oily water. the catch can is drained at the oil change, every 1K miles. The local dump takes used oil for free.

If we have got to the point where the tiny amount of oily vapour being blown away in the exhaust stream of a Buell is going to affect the environment then we are all totally f##ked anyway ; )
