I have an 02 X1W which suddenly began acting like its rev-limited at like 4K RPM (ya- OUCH).. It has the race ECM. I've had no rev issues since installing that like 6 years ago; this just started.

The odd thing is, with the bike parked, I can throttle it right up to redline and sustain it there, with no issues, no hesitation. But when riding, in-gear, it starts breaking up badly at around 4K RPM and won't go any higher.

Mine did that a few years ago ...... it would rev if you opened the throttle very slowly or when not under load, the only thing I found wrong was that the exhaust system was loose at the heads and after resecuring it ran fine. All I could think of was that somehow it screwed the 02 reading up through it losing it's earth path to the heads (the rest of the system is rubber mounted)

I'll check that tonight. I haven't noticed any unusually loud engine noise but its so loud maybe I just can't hear it?

I bought new plugs today (cheepo NGK #4179) to see if that helps.

So far the CRAZY LOOSE belt hasn't snapped on me - I guess THAT'S some progress : )

.. I replaced the plugs last night. One was fouled. I used NGK #4179. The HD plugs I pulled out were sooty black fuzz.

Would this imply I need a HOTTER plug?

No, you probably need a new ETS, engine temp sensor. Replace the O2 sensor too, it's cheap.

Both can be had from our excellent sponsor Al and Joanne at American Sport Bike.

You may want to get the socket they sell for the ETS. Makes it easier to remove/install.

What is the old saying: If you see hoofprints, look for horses, not zebras?

In other words,if the bike ran fine in the past, and now doesn't, with nothing changed or modified, then something has happened that hotter plugs won't really fix.

The ECU is 'seeing' a lean mixture, and the AFV is compensating for that. Hence the sooty, fouled plugs. Assuming the air cleaner, for example, is not clogged. Or the above mentioned loose exhaust inhibiting the O2 sensor from doing a proper job.

ECMSpy would be where I would start; lots of good info to point you in the right direction.

In the interim, an engine missing like this is often an ignition issue. Try pulling the cover over the cam position sensor and check for signs of overheating.
As always, check grounds, battery condition, security of battery cables and various connectors, ect.

the exhaust headers seem to be secure and tite- at least the bolts are.

I did a quick search in this forum but I'm not seeing where a good cheap source is for O2 and temp sensors for the 02 (EFI) X1?

Im on the American Sport Bike site now- I see the O2 sensor on the X1 engine page.

16079 - O2 Sensor for FI Buells

How many O2 sensors do I need to buy to replace them all?

I found this temp sensor its like $70:
17035 - Head Temp Sensor for FI Buells

I thought I read in other posts that the temp sensor was around $20?

They are correct for X1 ...not sure if Xb's and 1125's use the same, I've a feeling that the 1125 at least uses different.
As for the head temp sensor in the UK they list at £80 for X1's ............ the later type for 2008 onwards are cheaper and just have the wrong connector on them but are the same sensor.See this post on ukbeg

can you point me to a HOW-TO post for the ECMSPY? I went to the site and looked at the PC-dongle page. It looked like it had to be hand made and then holes punched in the harness plugs, etc? Zoiks!

First, I advise taking a breath and slowing down a bit, LOL.

No, I really doubt the aircleaner can be that dirty. I'm still leaning towards and ignition issue. As always, check your battery leads and insure they are tight. Check the spark plug wires and confirm the ends are not corroded and are properly seated in the coil. Make sure the connectors at the ECU are not corroded and tight. Ect.

As to the 02 sensor, there is only one. Go to the auto parts store of choice and get a Bosch #12014 sensor. Same as the OE one.

Check with Al at American Sport Bike for the ECMSpy cable. It plugs into the data port connector under the seat. And get your service manual from him, if you don't already have one.

Easiest way to remove old O2 sensor is to break off the back end with an large pair of pliers.

That way you can get the correct socket on the O2 nut at the exhaust bung.
