With the race ecm now discontinued for the X1 is the power commander the only way now. I searched the vault and found so many bad comments about installing the commander but it is looking to me it may be the only way to tune my bike. The last race ecm I seen on ebay sold for 405 and if anything was wrong with it you are out of luck. Do I have to leave my bike stock. All I would like is to do to it is a better sounding muffler.

If you just change the muffler and don't change the intake system, you may be fine but a dyno run with an exhaust analyzer will tell. I suggest you make two dyno runs, one before and one after any change you make to the bike. The reason for the before and after check is to identify lean conditions which can hurt your engine.

FYI, I started by doing the gutted air box with K&N filter and adding a V&H muffler. Then put a Techlusion DFO on it as the dyno run looked too lean. What I ended up with was a good dyno chart, but the bike started surging. Adding the Race ECM to this concoction and doing another dyno tune yielded excellent results.

From what I have been told by the tuner, the surging I experienced was not the norm. He had done a number of Buell's (and a ton of Harley's) with this configuration and they worked superbly. I can't fault his statement as I was referred to him by many folks that had their bikes modified by him.

Ergo, take it step by step as YMMV. I don't believe there is only one way to accomplish what you want. For every negative post you read about a modification to an X1, you will most likely find a number of good ones. Go Figure, eh?

There is another programmer called a Techlusion. I had checked into it before I was able to get one of the last few race ecms from one of the boards sponsors Americansportbike.com. I hear it only addresses fuel mapping and not timing. When I got my race ecm I quit researching the Techlusion but you might want to check it out. Skip

I ended up pulling my power commander off my 2000 X1. I have a forcewinder intake, race ECM, race header with a custom D&D slip on. My check engine light kept coming on so I unplugged the PC. I has run better ever since and no more light.

I have a 99 X1 w/ the Race ECM and PC II or III.
My Engine Lt was coming on also and I called Power Commander.
They were aware of the issue, so they sent me the Updated Version.
And Voila! No Check Engine Light.
Funny part is after all that I am currently running with the PC set at 0.
I do have issues with stumbling, when blipping the throttle while downshifting.
Even after replacing the Intake Seals.
But, I couldn't separate the Throttle Body from the Y Tube Thing to replace that Seal.
Maybe this seal is leaking?

NeverSellit,
Does your bike just about die when blipping? especially going from 2nd to 1st? My 2001 does it whenever the temp is above 65 degrees or so (my data collection is very informal)

I've check the seals, by spraying wd40 at idle, no change in idle while doing so. I think its just part of the config. Mine did it with Race ECM, Forcewinder & E-series pipe. I replaced the pipe with a Wileyco (just because I had the opportunity) and it seems to behave a little better, but not much.

I ran a power commander for a while, but I disconnected it when I started fouling plugs. The problem turned out to be the 02 sensor.

I never had any issues with the PC. I think if i can find a nearby shop to dyno tune it, I'll give it another go

Mbsween,
No, Its more of a stumble, like the motor can't keep up with the throttle.
I didn't try the WD40 Test, just replaced the two seals on the manifold.
I couldn't replace the seal between the Manifold and the throttle body.
I also replaced the O2 Sensor when I changed Exhausts.
Thanks, Rob
