What are stock x1 headers made of? I noticed they aren't magnetic. There isnt stainless under that grey/silver coating is there?

Stainless. What grade it is I'm not sure of.

So...could it be polished? Is it hard to remove the coating?

If your headers are coated they've probably got a ceramic finish on them.

Stock headers polish beautifully, here's an example:

Supertrapp mufflers are a nice stainless steel that polishes up nicely as well:

Sand the paint off if it's not aging well, or use a chemical stripper, bead blast, or other. You'll want to use a medium grit so there's not any super deep scratches to polish out as you work your way up to higher grit papers.

I used a red flap disk with layers scotch-brite and sanding medium in my drill to remove the factory machining in the metal, then went from 500 grit to 2000 in stages. That was the first time I polished it, eight years later I took it all to a local metal polisher and they cleaned up really well for about $100.

I sent mine into jet hot coating and had the ceramic coated in polished looking finish. they last a long time with no visible wear to them and I dont have to continue staying after them with polish. Ive done it to my X1 and my S1 now.

Cool, thanks guys! How much did the jet hot cost? Now to get the dent out of my header. I've been trying the freezing technique, but after three tries, I still have a dent. Maybe i'll have to get another header.
