For anyone who has swapped from the original shifter detent plate (pre 2000) to the updated 2000+ shifter detent plate, did you notice any difference in the shifting? I have seen some say they did and other notice no difference. My bike shifts fine as it is but if it makes a different and improves shifting I would probably swap it.


And for those of you that have done the swap, how difficult/time consuming is it?

Pretty easy job. Shifting slightly improved with neutral much easier to find. Less false neutrals, too, but it does still happen every now and then.

well my stock 00 M2 wrap around shift, had a lot of wear in bush, lot of play, did not seem to shift positively.
i got the update feels more positive to me. i also run it reverse one up four down & like it that way. just i think i could improve it making a stronger mount. as it pivots off one bolt i think it could flex if you push too hard a mount useing the two bolts would stiffen it up more i think.
it also looks much neater to me.

This thread caught my attention - on my 2000 x1 it takes quite a bit of effort to get a good 1-2 shift, but sometimes even that's not enough to get through neutral. I figure that my detent plate is probably worn, but is there any good way to inspect it without taking the clutch assembly off? Or is it just worth it to go ahead and replace it?

Things that affect you transmission:

Primary chain too tight ...

Drive belt too tight ...

Clutch not adjusted correctly ...

SPRING PLATE(aka grenade plarte)going bad ...

Shifter drum detent plate pins loose ...

Shifter shaft assembly out of adjustment(detent plate) ...

Springs on shifter shaft assemble(detent plate) ...

Foot shifter lever not in correct ergonomic position ...

Abusive shifting ...

All of the above when out of adjustment causes premature transmission parts wear ...

I've replaced the detent plate on all my Buells. Also on others over the years. Noticed an improvement on all of them. If you're all ready in there, it's an easy and cheap swap.
When you have the plate off, check to make sure your drum pins haven't started backing out (as mentioned above).
