Well I'm makin everything all pretty and shiny on my bike while it's torn apart. My question is can the ugly zinc plated tie rod at the front of the motor be polished without it corroding? Or would it be better to just paint it black or polish and then clear coat it? Thanks, Spencer | ||

I don't think plain old zinc polishes much. That's why they sell this: http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/5565.html But I would just buff it on a wheel, and call it done. | ||

Hmm I didnt think about chroming it, I wonder how much that would cost to get done on a small part like that. And could they even chrome it considering the moving part in the eyes cant be removed? Ive seen that Jayvee but just cant justify spending $95 when I've got a perfectly good one here. Im gonna have a lot of black on my bike so I thought about maybe KalGard Gunkote'ing it and tape off the eyes and just be done with it. That or hit it with some fine grit sandpaper and then polish it and then hit it with some clear coat. -spencer- | ||

I've polished plenty of zinc fasteners over the years, usually with a small buffing wheel in a hand drill. The tie bar should polish up as well, I'd avoid using any abrasive on it unless it's nasty with rust, just use some degreaser to clean it up, then red buffing compound on a buffing wheel, maybe use a fine polish after that depending on how well it cleans up. Zinc will clean up nicely, if you strip the coating off with sandpaper it's not going to clean up very well. Using the fine polishing paste or another fine polish on a buffer to get a well polished, smooth finish that will resist further corrosion for a while. I have also looked at the polished stainless part, and also can't justify the expense. The gun finish sounds like a cool idea. |
