Just bought a 2000 S3 for xmas. Man, the air box is ugly!! I have a 95 S2 that I put a forcewinder on and it looks great. I never had a fuel injected bike (S3). What mods would I need to perform? Anyone aware of a less expensive option that the $350 Forcewinder kit?) | ||

Do a search for "econowinder". The only difference between the FI and carbed kit is there is a second hole in the air filter for the temp sensor to live. My approach is to route the breather out of the airfilter and then there is an extra hole if you get the carbed version. | ||

I must be the only guy on the planet besides Erik Buell that thinks those stock airboxes are pure freakin' genius. Do me a favor: keep that airbox with the bike so the next owner doesn't have to hunt one down. BTW: congrats on the bike. I think I know which one you bought. It's a looker. | ||

I put a forcewinder on mine to replace the carbon race one as my knee hit it. I have now fitted the stock airbox OVER the forcewinder as I want to fit the fairing lowers in winter and to give it more of a stock look. I like the sleeper look. | ||

Love to ride with you. I have a couple of friends that ride Harleys, but they're usually so busy adjusting their bandannas or adding more chrome crap to their bikes that they don't like to ride the twisties. | ||

just put the snorkel on my M2 in place of a shorty air cleaner I had ( from previous owner, looks like 1/3 of a 3 deuce setup for flathead fords ) the front wheel lifts 500 RPM sooner. The stock airbox has some genius to it for sure. I've been reading the math behind the Helmholtz theories, amazing stuff for 1870 ! | ||

The econowinder is a modified stock intake snorkel. The stock snorkel has holes in it that, combined with the air box, form a Helmholtz resonator, the purpose of which is to reduce intake noise. If you plug the holes in the snorkel, and mount a filter directly to it vs. the air box, you get an economy version of the forcewinder intake. | ||

I'm wondering if the length of the snorkel might have been put there to increase the inertia of the incoming charge like a tunnel ram. Just guessing | ||

So the Helmholtz resonator is used to cancel the engine's output frequency?(The engine's noise?) Is there a detriment to the engine's performance? Assuming that I remove the airbox and use just the snorkel and a filter, the engine would be louder? My new S3 has a header, which would probably mean that the factory set tuning of the Helmholtz resonator has been altered and therefore is not canceling engine noise? I don't know? Had to work today so I'm just killing time? Thanks for the information and the concept to think about. | ||

Yes, it would be louder, but not significantly so. It's been a while, but from what I can recall, EPA noise testing at the time was done from the right side of the bike. Hence the exhaust exits left, and some effort was made to reduce intake noise, since it is on the right. They couldn't do much about the cam clatter or lifter noise, so they did what they could do to reduce noise elsewhere in order to meet EPA emission standards. The Buell Race Kit instructions say to remove the resonator. | ||

The noise that it cancels is the intake "honk". Riding my S2 immediately after riding the M2 (with stock airbox at the time), it sounded like my S2 had a knock. I could hear the intake pulses coming from the hamcan intake. Now that the M2 has a Buell race hamcan...they have matching noises  The breadbox is large...but it does a good job. I'll be keeping the one on my S3 Defender. I do, however, need a new outer cover (rashed from a low speed drop, apparently). If anyone is going to get rid of theirs, let me know... | ||

I took the air box cover off my new S3 and there was no snorkel? There was a nice K&N filter but no snorkel? Is this unusual? I bought a used snorkel this morning. Is there any type of gasket or plate that sits between the snorkel and the FI unit? Thanks | ||

Sounds like someone installed the race airbox kit. It consists of the filter and a short venturi ring in place of the snorkel. | ||

I believe that you are correct. Is it possible to mount the snorkel over the venturi ring? | ||

No the venturi ring is held on by the same three screws. The S3 and M2 airboxes seem to work fine for the venturi ring+K&N mod but the X1 boxes do not. My X1 started out as a demo bike and the dealer had gutted the airbox with that approach. Dirt got in from the edge of the airbox. This is why I finally gave up with it and got the forcewinder. That dealership was of no use to me in getting the original parts. | ||

I have a Forcewinder intake on my 99 S3T and I believe it works very well. having said that, I am desperate for an OEM system if anybody has one lying around, I am interested in the purchase. thanks | ||

there's a stretch of 2-lane not to far from my house where I run my M2 thru all five gears from time to time down and up a hill. With the shorty air cleaner I could usually hit 102 before I had to make a stop sign. Last week someone got on the road ahead of me, and after they turned off I ran all the gears and still managed a 105. I'm sold on the snorkel, just don't tell the sheriff  | ||

This is mine. Just finished it this weekend. Used 1/2" grade 8 bolts drilled thru and tapped for 1/8" NPT compression fittings and some scrap stainless tubing for the breathers  | ||

It may be a good idea to use that airbox support to help hold everything up. Love the breather setup  |
