Just recently, my 99 S3 has become hard to start when it has been sitting overnight. I crank it, it will run for a second and then die. Repeat that about 5 times and then it will run steadily. Starts fine the rest of the day. Any IDEAS? I am thinking that maybe the temperature sensor is not working? I have the ECM cable and software. Thanks again, I have received a lot of great help on this forum.

Mine did that when I had a bad temp sensor. You should be able to test it with a multi meter if you can find the expected value for the temp in your area.

ETS (engine temp sensor) or maybe the cold start enrichener.

If this happened all by itself as the temps got colder, first thing I'd do it reset the TPS. I would not mess with the cold start enrichment table. You can also raise your idle speed a little.

Sounds like nothing is wrong.
Cold weather => set idle a little higher.

Shouldn't the FI adjust for it? Isn't that what the air temp sensor is for?

The older FI units are not capable of adjusting the idle speed, just the mixture.

People always jump on my ass for this but...

My X1 always needs the throttle opened a tiny bit when the engine is started cold.
Always has since new.
Except for when the dealerships would set my idle speed when the engine was cold.
Then my "idle" was 2000 RPM when warmed up.

"We noticed you bike was idling poorly so we set the idle to 1200"
"gee thanks. Did you warm it up first?"
"uhhh?"

What Nate said about a cold idle. My '99 X1 with race ECM, Forcewinder, and V&H slip on muffler always needs the throttle held open a little for a couple of minutes. Then it will cold idle. Once warm, it's turning 1150 rpm, just as I've set it.

My x1 also needs some throttle for 30-60 seconds after cold start. I'm glad to hear that others also have this issue. When i get around to buying an ecmspy cable i think i might try tossing in some more cold start fuel to see if it helps.

Mine too, except that if I give it any throttle at all, it won't start. Make a fist, extend index finger, push starter button. After it warms up, adjust idle.

More fuel at cold start (using the enrichener % in ECMspy) doesn't work.

My 99 X1 does the same thing, needs a bit of throttle, then settles down. It's harder to start now because I'm still running 20w50 in it.

Thanks for the advice. I never thought about giving it a little throttle, I will try that. Also need to hook up the ecm spy and see what the intake temp is saying, if the temp sensor is working.

"A little" throttle is really really tiny too.
Not even 1/16th. Just barely take it off the the idle stop.

Try to keep the rpms under 2000 until it's warmed up to prevent popping gaskets.

I should clarify. I give the idle adjust cable a little twist before I start it. So it's already got the throttle cracked a bit when I start it. If I give it any more than that, it won't start. After it warms up, I turn the idle down a bit. Talking about a quarter of a turn on the cable.

I usually crank with no throttle and wait until I hear the first pop and then give it just a little as Natexlh1000 mentioned.

My 01 X1 has always needed the throttle open just a pinch to start. But it always runs perfectly where i set it last time it was hot.
