On my S1, one must be careful to never leave the key in or when moving the fork the key is snapped in 1/2. I do this every so and then. In the past, this german blank was unknown to american locksmiths and HD was the only source for something like $60.

I recently broke another key during a moment of distraction. Are there any non OEM sources for this key?

its a barrel type key? I went to a local lock smith and got 4 keys made up for $20. He said the HD barrel type keys are a bitch to replicate because they have a ball bearing and you have to drill a perfect hole in the side of the key to engage that bearing... He enjoyed the challenge. messed up 2 keys but got the hang of it after. so all in all it was a 6 pack of beer and $20 for 4 keys. cant beat that.

1 to use
1 to loose

...people still lock their forks....?

A 96 is going to have a small, flat key with teeth on one side like a house key.

Yeah, I do. But the little one on My S1W doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling when I have to leave the bike unattended. So, I end up trying to park and go to a bar/restaurant and position my self in a spot where I can keep an eye on it... doesn't always work out.

What are all of you doing for security these days?

BTW The part number for that lock is 48140-84A "Steering Head Lock Assembly w/key" It still available although you have to dig around a bit...

The flat side frame lock key.
A local locksmith made a copy for me, they had to shave down the head... The only key I have not been able to get copy was the flat side early style gas cap key.
