Here is my situation:
1999 x1 with forcewinder intake and force exhaust. The bike will not run unless the AFV is set to 150. checked intake, exhaust and fuel injectors with MAPP and no change in ther idle. while bike is idling i the only thing i see on ECM that seems out of wack is the TPS setting jumps from 5.1 to 4.7 and back to 5.1. i have a stock ECM on the bike with what looks to be a map that has been played with. i also have a race ecm but the bike will not even start with this installed. anybody want to take this on?

O2 sensor fail? Are your plugs black and fuel fouled?

Could be an engine temp sensor too. I had one fail and the bike would buck under load, run better at steady throttle state, then buck and backfire when hitting the throttle again.

Any DTC's showing? That would be Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

Is your battery fully charged? How old is it? Load tested recently?

Have you changed fuel sources recently? Are they running e15 in your neck of the woods?

What fuel map are you using?

No codes... I have a stock ecm with what I think is a map that has been played with. I bought a race ecm and the bike will not start with it.

Suspect fuel pump/ fuel filter causing lack of pressure so injectors not getting enough fuel. Should see about 55 psi and it should not drop off after key is off.

Was bike running before or has it sat for awhile.

It was bought as a parts bike. I rebuilt the motor and here is where I am. Fuel pump and fuel injectors are my next place to look.

played with the bike today:
bike started with the AFV at 135.
watched cold start enrichment start at 130% and work its way down to 100% when engine was at 160-165 deg cel. also monitored EGO voltage and it went lower as cold start enrichment went down with it. when cold start enrichment hit 100% the EG0 was at .6. One thing that does not sound right is the fuel pump when it primes. per the service manual i turned the ignition key several times on and off in a row and listened to the pump as it primed and it seemed like it labored each time a little more... bad fuel pump?
plugs look tan by the way.

If it was sitting for a while, perhaps it just needs to be run to dissolve out the gummy crap in the fuel line.
Give it some exercise and see if it improves a little.

Bike won't start at all, or it won't stay running with the new race ECM?

Try flashing the race map into the stock ECM. The intake and exhaust you're using will make it run lean with a stock map, which would cause your AFV to go up. And who knows what tweaks the PO made to the map.

I've never used ECMspy before, but I understand it has an injector test option. Can you pull an injector and see if it sprays?

okay, pulled the injectors and noticed a few things: the front injector was not seated all the way in the intake manifold. when i removed both injectors to look inside i noticed lots of little rubber particles in the fuel rail and around the injector for the rear cylinder. i then removed the fuel line from the fuel pump to the fuel rail and cut it open... the inside is all dried, cracked and flaking. i think i have found the reason the AFV needs to be at 135 to 150 for the bike to idle... clogged injectors!!. next step is to find a suitable sub at autozone or get these cleaned and calibrated.

Should be easy to find a place to clean them. We use RC Injection in Socal.

Technically, the reason for the high AFV was poor injector seals not clogged injectors.
Make sure you replace the o-rings before putting things back together.

WRONG kakali...
My injectors could not flow enough fuel because they were clogged, the ECM compensated with a higher AFV. seals were all good with no leaks.

Latest...
fuel injectors cleaned, tried several different maps from various people on this board (thnx), and it seems when i run the STOCK RACE ECM with the force winder and force exhust is the answer!! bikes starts and runs like normal and the flat spot at 3000-3500 is gone with the AFV at 100, just wanted to update.

I am having a similar problem with my bike. I had the motor rebuilt about 2 months ago and got new injectors for it and at first it seemed fine (for 10-15) miles, but I cannor figure out why when under load it wants to die. HD sayed my fuel pump and pressure are good. they did a TPS reset and put a new O2 and air intake sensor and it seemed fine for a while (for the second time) and once again, i get the popping and sputtering at expressway speeds (under 55 at 2500 rpm). When on freeway at 65-70@ 3,000 rpm, it seems to run fine. I am also using a race only ECM. any thoughts.
