Well i think about two months back, i took the stock manifold & stock CV40 carb off as had stock factory jetting and was very lean. i could have re jetted it but i had a Bob Wood built CV44 he calls a Rebel 43.5 i've had this carb for a number of years & used it on a twin cam dyna, worked beautiful got good gas mileage too better than stock carb.
well i got an SE manifold to suit a CV44 XL new seals put it on everything that fits the cv40 ( stock carb ) fits this, it just needed the larger manifold.
i'm getting better gas milage than i was with the stock lean CV40 the bike runs great starts easy idles well. a friend has a 2002 M2 with Mikuni carb i have never used a Mikuni so no idea what they work like. But yesturday i let my friend ride my M2, when he came back i asked if he would swap carbs i would give him the Wood Cv44 for his HSR42 he jumped at the offer that quick, i changed my mind.

a well tuned keihin may be better than a poorly tuned Mikuni. My CV has the dynojet setup. The slide is better than the stocker. they both gum up, not as fast with the dynojet.

My 96S1 has a welded up D&D megaphone muffler, a Crane Hi4 ignition, and the HSR42 EZ Since I have put the Mikuni on I have had to lean it out, especially the accelerator pump. Mikuni's start out rich, apparently it saves then the hassle of burned up engine complaints.

My Mikuni 42mm worked perfectly with very minor adjustments. I started rich to be safe, and after buying all manner of jets and a lot of dyno time ended up with the stock main jet in it. It killed the modded and Thunderslide equipped CV carb for throttle response. The only downside was that it was a little too responsive. The bike wanted to slide and/or wheelie with little provocation. It was pretty hairy to ride in the cold and/or rain.

For the past few years I've been running a Mikuni 45. Response down low is softer and it runs great, save for that you can't just whack it open anymore at from low openings. It works great on the track but kinda sucks on the street. Mileage is surprisingly the same as with the CV40 and Mikuni 42.

I've thought about going with a CV44, but that CV40 was such a dog no matter what I did to it that I just can't go back.

Well here's my little story....Started with the 40CV like everybody, put in the Yost stuff, was better. Not content, got a S$S intake and super E, then Yost for that one. Didn't like as well as the CV40Yost, so went back.(all checked on dyno for jetting)
Decided to try S&E intake(44cv)with CV40Yost, noticeably better.Later purchased a CV44, better yet.Ran this set-up for five years, didn't think there was anything better. Finally got a great deal on an HSR42 damaged, bought all the necessary parts to repair and installed it to the 44 intake. The bike starts better, idles better, instant throttle response and the only set-up I haven't checked on the dyno...yet.Oh, sorry I did put the Yost kit in it also. And I doubt I will ever go back.

Well , when i had the wood 43.5 on the twin cam dyna 95 inch i only saw 2HP increase over a stock SE CV44. but the big gain was gas mileage. and how smooth the motor runs. it does not use a conventional needle that tappers it uses a stepped needle. Bob Wood blue prints this carb bores out the venturi to 43.5mm he also increases the capacity of the float bowl to hold more gas. he drills out the stock air bleed and changes it so the low speed jet goes higher in the rev before the main jet starts to work. i think it's more carb than my stock M2 needs but as its a CV the vacume slide keeps the velocity up so you can't give it too much air. my friend has a flow bench we flow tested the wood 43.5 and a s&s G and they both flowed the same amount of air. so it can flow way more air than my motor will need & i get 70mpg on the open road.
my friend with the M2 that has HSR 42 bought the bike with that carb on & the bike has been drag raced so i'm sure it's tuned ok, my friend has a dyno jet 250i with load control & can check AFR i might fine tune the wood carb on it as the main jets it uses are Holley and go up in 1 thou increasements, so can be dialed in very fine.
