Well I just installed my Mikuni HSR-42 carb and I'm having a problem with my cables. Both of them seem too long and have too much slack ESPECIALLY the idle return cable. My cables don't match my controls as I have the newer style controls that used cables with plastic threads/fittings but my cables have the metal ends from the pre 99 tubers. Is there anyway to cut down the cables? The part that is too long is the wire itself not the overall length. If I used the correct cables would it make a difference? From what I thought they were all the same length.

For example, when I return the throttle to idle the idle return cable almost comes out of the carb housing it
Gets so much extra slack

Thanks,
Spencer

If the cable you have has a brass barrel on it you can get it hot with a soldering iron or propane torch and pull it off. Then cut your cable to length and solder it back on. I'm talking about the throttle tube side, not the carb side as those are usually lead. Or go find/machine a brass barrel for the carb side.

Yes they are strong, never seen one pull off if done right.

Hey RSM!

Sounds like your Mikuni is set up for a Sportster and the throttle bracket assembly is wrong. Thats the part where the cables attach to the carburetor throttle control. You need Mikuni part number TM4251 for the Buell. As far as your threaded cable ends are concerned, metal should be fine as long as the throttle and idle return threads fit correctly (and cable lengths are the same).

I think you should be ok with the corrected bracket.

I do not advise cutting the cables...

Good Luck!

The mikuni I have is the easy kit for the buells/sportsters, ill check into the correct bracket. My threaded ends actually don't tread into anything in my controls on the bar, they poke into a recessed hole but there is nothing there holding them in place.

Unfortunately both my barrels are lead

I will get some pics tonight

Thanks,
Spencer

Ken,
Did you use their throttle(500 or 600) or a different one?

I had the same problem way back in 2002. I was instructed to carefully bend the bracket.. Here is the post from back then.

Thanks a ton guys, I have the correct cables on the way and if they are still a little too long I will get some spacers/do some bending.

Thanks again,
Spencer
