Okay well I am pretty sure that my exhaust gaskets are toast, the previous owner had a custom muffler made and the mounting on it was pretty sub par and it wiggled around pretty good, ive noticed a ticking sound coming from the front of the bike and some whisps of smoke in front of my headlights at night.


Anyways, I rode the bike for a little while tonight and when I got home I decided to sit down next to the bike and listen closely and it sounded like there is a knocking sound coming from the front of the motor. I put my ear as close as I could to where the muffler meats the header and I could hear the sound in the tubing there, but it also sounded like it was coming from the motor as well, I couldnt get my head close enough to really tell as the bike was pretty hot. I may have been just imagining things but I am a little stumped/worried after hearing that sound.

Any ideas or suggestions, could it simply be the exhaust gasket or does it sound like something else?


The bike is a 99 M2 with 9500 miles on it.

If it is a sharp tick, its probably an exhaust leak.

The sharp tick I hear when riding, but when I get down next to the bike it sounds louder and more like someone tapping a screwdriver on a metal pipe

Exhaust leak. If you want to try something before you replace the gaskets, try some Marvel Mystery oil. If its a sticky lifter, this will free it. If it persists, its most likely a exhaust gasket leaking.

Any downsides to running the Mystery oil? Or do you just run it for a bit then flush it out?

I've got some gaskets on the way do hopefully that will take care of it. If not I'll get some Mystery oil

No more than 25%. No flushing needed. Make sure you get the oil additive, not the fuel additive. Fuel additive is a little harder to find. The oil additive is more common at autozone or O'Reilly's. Like I said, it will free up sticky lifters if that's what it is.

You might have a bent pushrod. They're easy to pull and inspect. Once they're out and confirmed straight, you may as well lift the lifters out with a magnet and soak them overnight in a jar of oil/mystery oil mix. No need to pull the cam cover off. Just the pushrod tubes, and then lift from above.

The lifters are not expensive; p/n 18526-89A. I replaced mine at 25,000 miles.

Thanks guys, got my gaskets on the way and will pick up some mystery oil if the sound is still there.

What would cause a pushrod to get bent? I'm pullin the motor around Christmas, I will Definately pull the pushrods and lifters for a good cleaning/inspection if the sound goes away after the bushings/marvel oil.



I'm about 50 miles away from an oil change, should I use the marvel mystery oil now and ride it for a bit and then change the oil or does it need to be run for longer than that to free it up?

Also I read somewhere about an oil line being pinched under the starter preventing sufficient oil from passing through after the shock being messed with. The Harley dealership did the shock recall a month ago on my bike, I only rode it about 15 miles before they bought it and was all giddy about my new bike so I'm not sure if the sound was there before or not. Anyone know anything about that?
