Well I got my X1 back together this year. Back in late 2010 I broke the front engine mount, then the front head, so I ended up doing a new head (stage 2 from NHRS) and a 1250 kit (rebuilt head is on the rear cylinder) pistons, rings, piston pins and cylinders are all new.

I had the XB rocker boxes on there prior to this rebuild, so they are the same with new gaskets.

The other day I notice what seemed to be a lot of dust in the headlight, or I was back on some good window pane at the 1981 showing of Pink Floyd's The Wall (unrelated note I wasn't at that show but did catch the 2010 show in Buffalo)

Well I finally got around to looking at it and I have what appears to be a straight path from the exhaust to the catch can (a Yo Dude product for those that remember that kind of thing).

So question is, do the PCV type valves wear out or do I might have really messed something up during reassembly of the top end? Bike runs really well, has around 300 on the new top end. Rings we're gapped and pistons were in the heads from NRHS, so I never looked at them.

I'm guessing compression/leak down test are in order to see if the rings/valves aren't sealing.

The other thing that comes to mind is I missed the cam by a tooth, but I'd think that have shown up in a much more nasty way.

any suggestions?

Thanks
Matt

Matt, I don't have anything to help on this specific problem. However, I'm planning on doing the 1250 NRHS kit this winter and I'm interested on the tuning end of this project.

Thanks guys,

I hadn't considered the too much oil angle. I'll check and report back. Be nice if it were that simple.

The puke pipe isn't filling much.

As I said bike feels much stronger, AFV is right around 100. I'll post the ecmspy data later when I remember where I left the cable.

BTW the 1250 install is very straight forward, especially since Dan does the pistons/rings for you. It helps if you cut a couple pieces of wood that hold the cylinder/piston combo in place while you attach the con rod.

Good luck with the projects

Perhaps it's just not broken in?
The top end is new, right?

Nate,
You are correct. Just 325 miles on the new top end , well new except for the rocker boxes.

Is this typical behavior? I didn't have a catch can back in 01 when I first bought the bike and I'm "new" to Harley engine rebuilds.

How long before things settle in?

300 miles should be past the "smoke-in" stage...check compression and leakdown. Sounds like either a valve seal is leaking or you have a ring problem. Did you pull the pistons out of the jugs at all? Do you know if ring gaps may not have been properly spaced?

Rat,
Didn't pull the pistons, just assemble them as a unit.

I will be checking compression and leak down this week.

Thanks
matt

My X1 has always been a bit smokey when it's warmed up at night.

My actual oil consumption is less than a quart per 1000 miles so I never bothered to do anything about it.

Make sure your oil level is not too high as these bikes are really sensitive to being even a little bit overfilled. I keep mine halfway down on the dip stick.
If it is coming out of your breathers it normaly means you oil level is too high

But also be aware if you are in a really humid environment a lot of what you see coming out of the breathers is steam as water cannot burn so it has to go somewhere once it gets into your engine.

Once you do that watch your oil comnsumption. More than 1/2 quart every 750 miles we need to worry about it. Less than that means it is doing well.
