What cable and software are good for diagnosing problems on 2002 X1? I got a crack in my stock header on my 2002 X1 and the muffler was leaking at the seams. The bike ran good but I knew the cracked header would become a problem so I put on a D&D system, headers and muffler. No leaks at all in the new system. Now the bike runs rough and sometimes the check engine light comes on. Sometimes the check engine light doesn’t come on but the ride is rough. Then sometimes for like 10 or 30 miles it is a smooth ride. The bike has no problem accelerating. Just has a problem cruising at one consistent speed. I’m thinking the O2 sensor and possibly the spark plugs are the problem. Or do I need a TPS reset because of putting on a new exhaust system? Or is the reset only for a new ECM? How can I get the error codes from the bike? I have seen some cables for sell that you hook up to the bike and a computer. Which cable and software would be good for diagnosing problems? Do you have to have a cable and computer to do a TPS reset on a 2002 X1 or is there another way? | ||

Start with a TPS reset, be sure to do it at running temp or else you will just make it worse. I run ecmSpy do do all of my TPS/map resets. | ||

Nothing wrong with a TPS reset; can't hurt. And I'm sure you are thinking of ECMSpy and cable. Good tools, along with the Absolutely Necessary factory service manual. See Al at American Sport Bike. Check in the B.R.A.N. and see if someone nearby can help re the cable, ect. And given your bikes calendar age, the Engine Temp Sensor could be in a pre-fail mode. There is a way to check codes using a jumper wire at the data port (see the service manual, or check w/folks here. I would be happy to do it, but I'm away from my manuals until Mon) Multiple failure codes are usually a sign of a failing ETS sensor. Been there .... Hope this helps, Dave |
