I am shopping again.

I really want an S1 but the Cyclone with a S1 tail looks good too!

I found this...
http://www.airtech-streamlining.com/buell/S11996-9 8.htm

(# BS12 1/3 down the page)

Anyone done this mod? How difficult is the install?
Are there any advantages to the Cyclone vs the S1?
Any pitfalls?
Thanks.

BTW...I searched, no dice.

Not only is the bodywork different between an S1 and M2, but the rear frame hoop is also different. Parts are not exactly transferable without modifying the back section of the frame.

Both S1s and M2s are great bikes. The biggest difference handling wise is the inverted fork on the S1. The shocks were originally different as well but if they have the last recall shock they are likely the same in that regard. The other difference is in the engine, specifically cams. Some people prefer the milder M2 cams but I find the stock S1 cams are suited really well to these bikes. Both S1 and M2 used lightning heads between 97 and 98 (96 S1 as well). All S1Ws and 99 and up M2s used Thundderstorm heads. Headers on both S1s and M2s were stainless except the 97 and 98 which were mild steel.

Ergonomics are also a bit different. S1s used slightly lower bars with less pull back, they also had higher mounted footpegs for cornering clearance. Also, S1s have tachs, while it was an optional accessory on M2s.

Of course, there is the obvious, M2s have a longer tail section for better two-up riding. Even an S1 with a twintail does not have as much seat space as an M2 but it is usable.

You could buy my S1. I've been thinking of selling it all summer just haven't gotten around to cleaning it up and putting it up for sale.

So the S1 tail I linked will only fit a S1?

I guess it would be a replacement to the 2 up seat or damaged tail. Right?

Go the the M2 section of the site, and it tells you which S1 tails fit without modification, and which need it.
There's a couple of places like Twin MC, and Trojan that sell S1 tails (some are TwinTails) apparently made to fit M2 without modification.

The Airtech bodywork you linked to might be made differently and perhaps it is made to fit more than one model. One of the pictures on their site is clearly an M2 so they at least make bodywork that fits the M2. However, stock S1 tail sections (even Twintails) are not interchangeable without modification. The angle of rise on the S1 frame hoop is much steeper, which is a bigger issue than the different lengths of the rear frame sections, so just be sure to specify which model you want to use the tail section on if you talk to Airtech.

Jayvee can you find that thread and post it here regarding the S1 tail that no mods are needed to the frame, cause I can't find it. Thanks

Wow, they are gone. Twin has the only one I see, and they don't specify whether frame modifications are needed. RRC has pictures of theirs in their Gallery section, but none for sale. They used to sell both regular S1, and TwinTail S1 for the M2.
Not there any more! Sorry.

If it's a shorter tail, it will need the frame "hoop" shortened. The "hoop" is at a different angle on an S1, but the seat mounts are at the same angle. Shorten subframe, swap seats, use S1 tails.

I know a few people here have done it.

Ive got a nice side shot of an M2 with an S1 tail, I think they also changed out the front forks to either X1 or S1 upside down forks, it looks great, you get the best of both worlds....the frame that allows fro the X1 style header and the S1 look of the tail...Ill see if I can find the photo. unfortunately it doesnt go into any detail on exactly what work was down to make the change...just a photo.

I put the S1 tail on my 2K M2 and didn't alter the frame. The seat portion fits the frame fine and the after market tail lite and lic plate bracket cover the exposed loop. The side rails are exposed but I have breather lines attached to the rails so it's not too obvious.
This way I can always go back to my pre and post 99 M2 tail sections, if wanted. Although I have to admit, I love the look, not so much the comfort.

Here are some pics of my buddys bike. I think it's a m2 chassis, s1 tail, and x1 front end. He told me he had to weld the tail on. Pretty sick looking if you ask me.

Great find there Mees, that's pretty much what I did with mine in '03 or '04 shortened, narrowed and more sweep.

Or you can just do a '98 or older M2 tail and seat. Those parts are a direct swap and slim the tail down a lot.

I not only did it for the look but found the 99+ M2 seat too wide and it didn't offer enough room for moving around to change hot spots on long rides. With my S1 seat custom trimmed and then reupholstered I'm a lot more comfortable than I was on long rides with the "fat" tail and seat.

Phlegm posted some pics of my Franken-Buell. I am currently trying to put fuel injection on that bike. I like the tune-ability and torque response that fuel injection can provide. My M2 was carbureted and with the S&S big bore/stroker kit I'm not happy with the fuel delivery. I'm currently looking for X1 cams and EFI equipment.

My two cents for what it's worth.

Will the X1 cams work with M2 engine with carb?

You would need the whole formula. So the M2 would need to be 99 or newer with TS heads. Still there's a huge risk for failure on hopeummmm. What risks? YOU NAME IT
