Just a note from a German Buell cyclist:

I'm running a so called "Monster Big Bore Kit" from Revperf. That is 88" or 1430cc, with stock thunderstorm heads, stock cams, a HSA muffler and matched jetting setup.

Here in Germany we have 5% of ethanol in every brand of fuel, 10% in the cheapest one with only 95 octane.
The higher quality fuel has between 100 and 102 octane, that is "Shell V-Power" or "Aral Ultimate".
The lowest grade I can use in my bike is 98 octane "super plus", everything below and my motor is pinging. Have to add that I am mostly running my bike in the top half of the rev counter range when out of town.

It's an age old wisdom here in Germany to run our Buells with the highest grade of fuel to find. Never met nor heard from anybody in Germany who's not using at least 95 octane "super" fuel.

I was always wondering how these bikes were running in the United States, since as far as I know you are used to get much lower octane fuel at your pumps?

Oh, and I really enjoy watching your ideas for your bike springing to life.
The bar end mirrors look great, the seat is a work of art.
And really love your blacked out motor with the polished fins.
Wish I could get a hold of these fine stickers of yours, without spending an arm and a leg.

Gnutlethal the octane is measured at different points in different country's, each time gas or fuel or petrol or what ever it is called in the country of origin ( same thing ) each time it is pumped or porred it looses octane. so it is important to know where the octane was tested at or rated at, like it can be rated at the refinery thats RON or rated at the pump PON or rated at the motor MON.
we must rate our octane here in Australia at same point as you do in Germany. as similar numbers to what we have just we have very low @ 91 octane RON 95 & 98 & one with 10%E called E10 we have a high octane E85 but don't see that often.
but the important thing is just to have enough octane to be on the verge of knock or detonation & you will make the most HP or KW or what ever power measurement you like but if you have higher octane than the motor can use or burn at a fast enough rate you make less power.
i've tested this at the track saw my fastest speeds with lower octane but if you have very high compression ratio you need the slower burning higher octane.
the best i've used is Nitro!! just don't ever try it unless you know how to tune for it.

Lakes, Zed and Gnut, thanks for the compliments. I'm waiting on my orange front brake line to get here. I ordered some more of the orange fuel line to do some more fine tuning.
The fuel here in the states is RON, each fuel company orders fuel with a blend of chemicals that is added by them or the refinery, not really sure. But it is RON none the less. I frequently use the CAM2 race fuel since it is leaded and when I blend it with 93RON its a good blend and no pinging. VP has some good fuels but I cant justify $11.00 a gallon.
Nitro..... hmmm now there's an idea!

Goody, well i got it wrong about the gas octane, i saw you had lower octane at the pump when i was in USA last someone told me it was measured at the pump. i run 98RON from pump here. got 215 pound cranking no knocking ( detonation ) but will be putting in bolt in SE cams soon.
i'm taking it to track tonight if weather stays ok it will be hot here. will look at trap speed & 60 foot times 60 foot is rider, but i've had lot of experience with bikes at the drag strip & only useing it as a test not to see how quick i can make it go , i'll just let it idle then let the clutch out open throtle. as i did that b4 with it how it was and know what it could do as it was. so 60 foot time is my Torque test the trap speed at half track & full track is my HP test i'll just be pulling the clutch in to shift no flat clutchless shifts till i do the gear box for even more fun.
i'll use a Dyno to check AFR & tune later when i put in cams, but plugs look like its EFI now really good.
for me the track is the real test dyno's are just a tuning tool to test tune.
not many people do it this way sadly but i think it's the best way if you want to get them in top tune.
ps i'll only be shifting at just below 6,000 not really pushing it but thats how i did it when i tested it stock so it would be easy to directly compare, you try too hard you make mistakes.

got quicker 60 foot times & faster trap speed both full quarter & half track speed faster. so i got a good gain. and still stock cams & only have the 2" collector
next week my friend who is also experienced at drag racing bikes. is bringing his 00 Thunderstorm that has M2 flyscreen, its stock but has carbon aircleaner & buell 2 1/2" race header & White Brothers e pipe with disc's & closed indcap it goes good. will be interesting , but my pipe is restrictive still performs strong.

Lakes, sounds good, I can't seem to put my M2 through the paces at the track. Too much time invested to push it too hard. I want her to last and look mean for years to come. Sounds good though, I still think SE cams and head work is the way to go.

Goody never had a problem yet racing & riding long distance with HD's in past.
Still waiting for the bolt in SE cams to get here.
We have to ride slow here in Australia as speed camera's everywhere. Was not always like this though
So I go to the track to test my tune I don't flog it as has a lot more mid range torque now think the SE 1.72 ratio rocks helped too the track also blows out the carbon

Just put my steel braided orange teflon coated brake line on. The cool thing is this brake line can be bought off of ebay for $20. I kid you not, 34" long, I had to bend one end of the banjo fitting, easily done in a vice with a light tap of a hammer, use soft jaws in vice. Here is the link on ebay to get these brake lines, they have many colors.

Hi gusm2 have not been to the track much with m2 I raced it twice but was bracket racing so more important how quick I reacted & that I was consistent as was dial in a time, I won final of screaming eagle b4 Xmas but only runing about same time as you & not really trying but was doing quick reaction times & trap speedways ok at 112mph 60 ft was slow @ 2.0 but bike higher than I like also short & wheelies.
With my dyna 01 twin cam 95 cubic inch just stock stock shift no wheelie bar & cv 51 carb stock pipes with cycle shack slip ons but friend done heads & custom combustion chamber & custom order je pistons I ran 11.2 @ 121.5mph only 1.8 60ft that bike could run high tens if I did 1.6 60ft but I just don't really try as I ride to track & ride home so don't want to crash or break. But with the m2L shock I think I could get the m2 into 11's just havetoride clutch to stop wheelstanding but an get off lights a lot quicker now as have both feet on ground on the line. (Important).
With drag racing just look at your trap speed, high trap speed slow time just means u got the power but havetolearn to use it 106mph trap speed is enough to do 11's 120mph is enough to do 10's just look at 60ft time a good rider can do 1.5 60ft no wheelie bar on a street harley or Buell , 1.7 is ok 1.8 is soft 2.0 very soft
I'm enjoying riding more now but if a few friends want a go I'll alwaysbe in it at the track .
Cheers
Ps going over to see if m8 has time next week tout SE cams in mostly as crankingpressureneeds to drop might put a crane hi-4 ignition on so I can retard timing & change advance curve

who said speed kills? just wondering, as i'm 65 years old been racing most of my life, my friend is older than me and moved to Australia from England, he still rides fast & when he was young raced on the streets of England from Cafe to Cafe in some race they had, he also raced a Manx Norton 350cc & Manx Norton 500cc @ Isle of Man TT i've never seen him come off once but rides fast, seen him overtake Jap litre sports bikes in tight downhill corners on a harley twin cam shocked them as they found out they could not ride.
racing on a race track is ok. racing on the street risky.

Speed kills.

LIFE kills.

Think about it. Some folks are slow. Some are fast. Some drink, some smoke, some don't.

The ONLY commonality? They were alive first. Anything beyond that...is a crapshoot.

The most dangerous thing I do every day is get out of bed. Everything after that is easy : )
