Well it's time for an oil change before so i thought would post up and see what the most popular oil is this time.

Started with Amsoil, them went to mobile 1 (didn't notice a difference).

So what do you run?

i think if your not having oil related problems. stay with what you normally use. i use Redline 20W 60W motorcycle it handles very high temperatures. i've looked in my twin cam dyna motor after useing this oil, & it works so i'll just stay with it.

I just went through the pain of making this choice. My old 'red cap' Mobil 1 car oil isn't sold anymore. The 15w-50 with the gold cap isn't either. There aren't many choices left in a 50 weight oil and with an air cooled engine, I don't want to run a 40 weight.

After looking at the price of other 'motorcycle only' oils, the best price and performance point seems to be the Mobil 1 V-Twin synthetic oil sold at WalMart. It's suitable for the transmission and it's synthetic. It's $9 a quart which sounds high, until you compare it to other motorcycle-specific oils. I even priced Amsoil synthetic in larger quantities. Until I got into the big-drum pricing, the Mobil 1 was still cheaper.

I just read in the service manual the other day to use 10-40 for temps I'll actually be riding in, vs the 20-50. I've had Lucas Synth in my bike since I bought it last year. The H-D synth is still around $12/qt but you know it will work, and I haven't found the Lucas locally. I might have to try the M1 VT as well. Might as well change it since the head has been off

lucas 90w gear oil in the primary ($6 will do 1.5 primaries)

I am happy with it

Which Rotella diesel? They make a bunch of them and I couldn't find anything suitable.

Ditto for the 90 weight gear oil. What about your clutch? If not for the clutch, it would be an easy choice but, friction plates complicate it.

I use 15-40, regular rotella, cheap stuff

The lucas is the non-synthetic 80-90, says "safe for limited slip differentials" on the front. Hasn't given me any trouble with my clutch.

I ran rotella in the primary for about 10K miles with no problems but then I noticed my drain bolt was leaking a little so I stepped up to the thicker oil. Likely was that the bolt needed a new crush washer, but whatever. Have run it this way for over 5K and it seems primary chain stretch has decreased, but I don't know if that has anything to do with the thicker oil, and the stretch during the that first 10K wasn't much. I just got the bike in march so who knows, I gotta buy cheap oil cause I am going through tires like crazy and they are expensive : )

I have run that rotella in inline-4 cylinder jap bikes for over a decade with no issues either, and they all share the oil between the gearbox and crankcase.

Read one of those "internet oil reports" one time and cheap ass rotella was ranked up at the very top with the $20 a quart european synthic crap, so who knows.

I change oil every 2500 so I use Castrol 20-50 4stroke. My bikes like it, it performs well and I like it.

Mobil 1 V-Twin 20-50 with a bottle of ZDDP+ in motor.

Straight Mobil 1 V-Twin 20-50 in Primary and gearbox.

I have used Harley Dino 20W-50 most of the time. Or I have used Aeroshell 15W-50 it costs $6.00 or so get it at any airport.

SOME non approved oils are known to remove the varnish from the stator.

I use Rotella T 15-40 (as stated before the cheap stuff)in everything I've owned since about 1976 and never have had a oil related failure.

Sport Trans or Formula+ in the gear box.

I just started running Lucas 20-50 synthetic. It quieted down the rocker box a good bit. I like it so far. About $14 a quart.

Rotella T 15W-40 non synthetic (white jug) for the last 20,000km. I like to buy a 20L pail when it's on sale.

Formula+ in the primary -- cheap and I change it at the end of the season.

I change out the fluids per the manual, sometimes a bit sooner.

I tried Rotella in the primary for a couple thousand km's, but the clutch release felt peculiar at times. YMMV.

I normally use Royal Purple 20-50 but just switched to Castrol non-synthetic 20-50 just to experiment. Can't tell any difference.
I do have two big jugs of Rotella 15-40 in the garage but they go into my Jeep. Never crossed my mind to use it in the bike - not a cold weather rider.
For those of us who change the oil every 2K miles, I honestly don't think it really matters what brand of oil we use as long as it is the correct weight.

I use H-D Syn3. Everyone tells me I'm ruining my engine and such. I got several cases of it for free, so it's not like I'm going to throw it away. It's been working quite fine for the past 20K miles or so. The Amsoil guys are the worst. They talk like I've thrown grenades into my motor.

Formula+ in the primary, though my free supply of that just ran out. I've got a couple bottles Rev-Tech oil that I'm using in the interim (also free).

I change my oil every 2500 and primary/trans every 5K.

I can confirm that, two stators later I finally learned my lesson. Not worth the risk.

Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube. Killed two sets of stators/regulators/batteries within several months.

Rotella T 15/40 is very popular in my store. We have a lot of landscapers and construction guys that love it. It's definitely good stuff.

I agree with Rick, talkin to an amsoil guy is like talkin to one of those "magic elixer/snake oil" salesman.
